An epic battle between the player and the leader of Team Rocket, Giovanni, returns to Pokemon Go! Known for his intimidating demeanor, and even more so for his fierce main pokemon, the Classy Cat Pokemon Persian, players around the world anticipate another chance at the figure. We’ll show you what this team leader has in store, how to find him, and how best to beat him.
How Do I Fight Giovanni?
First, in order to fight Giovanni, you will have to complete the Special Research Tasks.
To find where these are, click the binocular symbol in the bottom right of the overworld screen, then swipe the screen over to the SPECIAL tab.
These research tasks differ from time to time, with new chances available during Pokemon Go Team Go Rocket events. But if you are an active player or a player that’s returning after a hiatus, there’s a chance you’ve already collected one of these special tasks that you can go ahead and pick back up! A few of these titles that you can look through your special research tasks are:
- The Shadowy Threat Grows
- An Inter-egg-sting Development
- Showdown in the Shadows
- The Higher They Fly
- Field Notes: Team GO Rocket
- A Seven-Colored Shadow
- Silent Schemes
- From the Shadows
- Ultra Beast Protection Efforts
- Shadowy Skirmishes
- A Shadowy Disturbance

When you have one of these tasks, complete them in order to assemble a Super Rocket Radar! Some of these tasks involve defeating grunts belonging to the devious group, along with Team Leaders Cliff, Arlo, and Sierra. Once they have been defeated, the super radar will assist in tracking down the head honcho’s hiding place, where you can take him on and beat him.
When you have the radar finished, head to Pokestops where he could be hiding or watch for a balloon floating across the skies above your avatar. Be aware though, as decoys of Giovanni will show up on the radar as well to mislead you!
What is on Giovanni’s Team?
Before you try to take on the boss, it’s important to know what it is that you’ll be facing. The big pokemon that Giovanni will carry with him changes from each season, but currently the ace up his sleeve is Tornadus!
