A common system seen in RPGs is the relationship system and this is no different in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. As you make your way through the game and continue to expand your party, you will have the chance to spend time with each of them and grow closer to them. Doing so won’t only give players the chance to learn more about these characters but will also unlock new mechanics, attacks, and collectibles. This guide will explain how the relationship system works in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
Relationship System Explained in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
The Relationship system will become available at the start of Act II. When you visit your camp, you can talk to each of your party members and will sometimes be given the option at the end of the short dialogue to “spend time” with them. These will become available as you progress through the story so you don’t need to do anything with these characters to unlock these scenes. Make sure to return to your camp after completing story-critical areas and talk to each character to see if you can progress your relationship. You can do multiple relationship scenes during your camp visits, so there is no downside to picking one character over another. This means you should just progress every relationship as they become available.

There are a total of 7 Relationship levels for all of your party members: Lune, Maelle, Sciel, Esquie, and Monoco. With Lune and Sciel, you are even given the chance to romance them at specific points. When going from Relationship Level 4 to 5 and Level 5 to 6, Sciel will give you the chance to enter a romance, while Lune will give you the chance when going from Relationship Level 6 to 7. If you choose one of these, the other will become unavailable.
At certain levels, you will unlock something for that given character. At Level 3 for each character, you will unlock their Level 1 Gradient Attack with Esquie’s Level 3 unlocking Verso’s first Gradient Attack. This continues with the Level 2 Gradient Attacks at Relationship Level 5. At Level 6, you get more unique rewards with Lune, Sciel, and Monoco giving you Music Records of their themes, Maelle giving you the “Paint Me” cosmetic, and Esquie unlocking the Underwater Diving ability which allows him to grab items that are found underwater. Level 7 for each character will unlock that given character’s Level 3 Gradient Attack, with Verso’s being earned for Esquie’s maxed-out relationship. When you reach the max level for a character, you will also unlock the character’s corresponding achievement.
