Left Behind is the DLC expansion for The Last of Us Part 1 that helps bridge the gap between “The University” and “Lakeside Resort” chapters while also giving plenty of additional backstory and character development to Ellie. The entire thing is split into two sections: present day, where Ellie searches an abandoned shopping mall hoping to find medical supplies for Joel, and in the past, where Ellie meets up with her friend and crush Riley while they reunite inside a mall just outside the Boston QZ.

There are plenty of artifacts to be found by Ellie during both points in time, so make sure to keep your eyes peeled…or just follow the guide below. If you’re uninterested in turning the roughly two-hour DLC into a scavenger hunt, don’t worry, most artifacts are completely optional and the ones that are mandatory are served up to you in a straightforward manner. That said, finding them all will count towards progress for the “Chronicles” trophy which is required if you’re going for the platinum for The Last of Us Part 1.

Back in a Flash

The first two artifacts in this section are unmissable.

#1: As soon as you start the DLC, Ellie will venture into a forgotten shopping mall. Follow the main path of the level and you’ll find a pharmacy. Ellie will comment on it saying that it’s where she should go to find supplies to help Joel. Go inside by crouching underneath some debris and look behind the checkout counter. Sitting on the floor behind the register is the first artifact.

#2: With the knowledge of the combination lock that’s keeping the gate closed at the store next door, leave the pharmacy and walk around the corner and open the lock to get inside. Make your way to the back left corner of the store and interact with the corpse. This will give you the key to the pharmacy.

#3: As soon as you get the key from the body, a photo roll will drop to the ground. Grab it and claim the first optional artifact in the DLC.

#4: Continue along the main path of the level until you find yourself walking through a busted-up photography store. Make your way through it and into the salon next door. Walk past the salon chairs to your right and in front of you, you’ll find a body of a soldier. Right in front of it on the ground is a note to pick up.

Mallrats

#1: As soon as you gain control, follow Riley along the path until you need to crouch under some wooden planks to proceed. Instead of going immediately to the left as Riley leads you, walk into the main section of the room and you’ll find a handful of wanted posters for Marlene sitting on a table in the middle of the room. One will be able to be picked up.

#2: Play through the level until Riley challenges you to a brick-throwing contest after it’s over, she’ll lead you down a few flights of stairs. Once you reach the bottom, follow her into a hallway and enter the first door on the left. Riley will continue down the hall and ask where you’re going, but don’t pay her any mind. Instead, head behind the kitchen island and you’ll find a note to the left of the coffee makers on the counter.

So Close

#1: Right when you regain control of Ellie after she looks up at the crashed helicopter, head to your right and walk through the remnants of the gated QZ area, exiting on the left. You’ll find a bloody gurney to your right and next to it on the floor another note.

#2: Continue along the main path until you wade through some water in search of a generator. Once you find it, a note will be on top of some boxes to its immediate left.

#3: Continue along the main path and deal with the infected that show up in the main section of the mall with the chopper. Open the previously unpowered gate and walk up the escalators. Instead of turning to the right to get into the helicopter, walk into the tent on the left. On the ground inside it, you’ll find an audio recorder.

Fun and Games

#1: This artifact is unmissable. Get onto the carousel and let the scene play out. After it’s done Riley will give you a joke book.

#2: After the carousel scene is over, head to the fast food restaurant directly behind Riley and jump over the counter. In the back left corner of the kitchen, you’ll find a handwritten note about Ellie.

The Enemy of My Enemy

#1: As soon as you gain control, open your backpack and the medical kit that you got in the helicopter will be automatically inside.

#2: Continue along the main path for a few seconds until you get to a larger hallway section of the mall. On the right side, you’ll see a dimly lit side room. Walk inside and follow the path until you find another body. Next to it is a photo of the helicopter crew.

#3: After getting the bow and taking out the bandits in the music store, head around the right side of the store and into the vents. Follow the trail of blood inside until you find one final body of a soldier. On the vent floor in front of it is an audio recorder. If you’ve found all of the artifacts in the game up to this point, after picking up the recorder, the “Chronicles” trophy should pop.
