The biggest games of 2018 are undoubtedly in the ACTION genre. That includes everything from open-world games, to difficult side-scrollers, to RPG-lite beat-em-ups. If the game is all about action, pressing buttons, and quick reflexes — it fits into the ACTION category for 2018. Red Dead Redemption 2, God of War, Spider-Man are more fit into this list, making it an incredibly stacked category. Picking just a handful of games was a challenge. Each and every one is a contender for best game of the year.

Action games weren’t just bigger in 2018, they were also more complex. With additional features, and (at times) complex narratives to go along with all the frenetic adventuring. 2018 gave us stories about protagonists growing older and learning parental responsibilities (God of War, Yakuza 6) — or inverted power fantasies completely in the sobering Red Dead Redemption 2. We finally got a game worthy of the Marvel stamp of quality, currently burning up cinemas — Marvel’s Spider-Man just might be the best comic book game ever made, and it’s got some steep competition in the Arkham Asylum series, so that’s saying something.
