Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Shrouded Shrine | Thyphlo Ruins Puzzle Guide

March 21, 2017 by Kevin Thielenhaus

On WiiU & Switch: There’s a shroud of complete darkness north of Hyrule Castle. Learn how to bring light to the endless black with these puzzle tips.

North of the Great Hyrule Forest in Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, you’ll find a mysterious ruin that’s shrouded in complete darkness.

Like other spooky locations, there’s a solution for this mystery — and a Shrine at the end of the road. As soon as Link enters the area, called “Thyphhlo Ruins” on the map, in the Woodland Tower Region, the “Shrouded Shrine” quest will begin in earnest.

If you’re stumped, lost, and totally confused by this particular challenge, we’ve got the solution you’ll need below.

Shrouded Shrine | Thyphlo Ruins Puzzle Guide

To find the Thyphlo Ruins, move north from Hyrule Castle and unlock the Woodland Tower map. You’ll see a large plot of land north of the Great Hyrule Forest that’s pretty conspicuous. Entering the area will create a shroud of complete darkness, and begin the “Shrouded Shrine” shrine quest.

  • How to Complete the “Shrouded Shrine” Quest:
    1. Enter the darkness of Thyphlo Ruins, found in the Woodland Tower Region to begin the quest.
    2. In the darkness, you’ll need a source of light. There are multiple sources of light Link can use:
      • A torch lit with flame — light a torch by dropping flint, using red chu chu jelly, or using an already lit lantern.
      • A fire elemental weapon. Torches provide more light, but fire elemental melee weapons will still light the darkness, and activate lanterns.
      • Cut down shrubs to find tree branches. These make for a good, short-term alternative to a torch.
    3. Find the bird statue lanterns and light them. Follow the direction the beak of the statue points.
      • Each beak points to another statue, and so on.
    4. Follow the bird statue beaks until Link reaches a glowing ancient pad. Here, you’ll encounter a giant Hinox monster.
      • Light as many torches as you can in this area to improve visibility.
      • Urbosa’s Fury, the ability unlocked after completing the Vah Naboris dungeon, is very useful here. Unleash it to stun the Hinox and attack with your most powerful weapons.
      • The eye of the Hinox is visible even in the dark. Strike it with an arrow to stun it.
    5. When the Hinox is dead, collect the ancient orb and place it in the ancient pad to reveal the shrine.

Like most shrines revealed in quests, this is a “blessing” — the Ketoh Wawai Shrine features a chest and an easy path to the altar.
