Breath of the Wild – How to Get Warm Clothing | Cold Survival Guide

March 5, 2017 by Kevin Thielenhaus

On WiiU & Switch: Safely travel across Mount Hylia with the Warm Doublet, special armor that protects Link from the cold. Here’s exactly how to get it.

Once you’ve got free reign to explorer the expanse of the Grand Plateau, you’ll quickly encounter a danger that’s unfamiliar for most Legend of Zelda fans — deadly cold weather. The mountains of the Grand Plateau in Breath of the Wild are far too cold for Link. You can always use cooked food to create a temporary cure to stave off freezing temperatures, but there’s a more permanent solution. You can earn yourself a warm set of clothes.

The Warm Doublet keeps Link safe while travelling through the chilly expanse of the upper mountains in the Grand Plateau. If you’re stuck early on and need some help, the solution isn’t entirely obvious. To get this winter wear, you’ll need three ingredients and a cooking pot to prepare a delicious feast for the Old Man. If only he’d tell you the proper ingredients…

Get all the details below, and learn how to complete the quest for warm clothing in Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

How to Get Warm Clothing | Cold Survival Guide

To earn the Warm Doublet, a special clothing piece that provides unlimited protection from cold weather status effects, you’ll need to cook a special recipe.

  • The Old Man’s Cooking Quest:
    • Reward: The Warm Doublet
    • How To Start:
      • Go to the Old Man’s house south of the Temple of Time in the Great Plateau. At the southern edge, read the diary inside the house with the cook pot outside.
      • The diary describes a special recipe for “Spicy Meat and Seafood Fry” — cook this recipe and talk to the Old Man NPC, saying “I cooked something” to gain the Warm Doublet.

The diary doesn’t reveal the Spicy Meat and Seafood Fry recipe. To cook it, you’ll need three ingredients:

  • How to Cook Spicy Meat and Seafood Fry:
    1. Collect three ingredients: Spicy Pepper, Raw Meat, and Hyrule Bass.
      • Spicy Peppers are found in the southern region of the Great Plateau. Look near the Old Man’s house, or growing on the path up to the River of the Dead.
      • Raw Meat drops from wild boars in the Forest of Spirits. Crouch and sneak close, then carefully aim an arrow to take them down in one shot. They’ll run away if they detect you.
      • Hyrule Bass are in the waters between the Great Plateau Tower and the Oman Au Shrine. Swim toward them from the deep and herd them toward the beach to trap them.
    2. After collecting your items, select your ingredients from the inventory. Press [A] and choose Hold — select all three.
    3. Exit the inventory menu, then press [A] to place the held ingredients into a cooking pot. There’s one located outside the Old Man’s house.

That’s all you need to know. After creating the recipe, speak with the Old Man to get your free Warm Doublet. Equip the flimsy armor and you’re free to explore the Mount Hylia region without taking damage from the cold weather.
