Here’s a feature I’ve never heard of before — on the Nintendo Switch, you can now earn in-game items from News posts. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the first game to use this feature, and it’s pretty cool — even if you don’t get anything impossibly awesome yet. Maybe one day we’ll see some real rewards, but for now I’m settling for the paltry offering Nintendo is giving us here.

It’s really simple — all you need is an internet connection and Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild downloaded, installed or inserted in your Nintendo Switch. This feature only works for the Switch version (as far as we know) so don’t expect much in the way of new features on the WiiU.
How To Get Free Items From News Posts
Before getting any items or finding fresh tips from the director of Breath of the Wild himself, you’ll need to start following the Breath of the Wild tips channel.
- On the Nintendo Switch main menu, select [News]
- Press [+] to “Find Channels“
- Select the “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” Channel.
- Select [Follow] and new posts all about Breath of the Wild will appear in the [News] feed.
Now that you’re following the Breath of the Wild tips channel, we can access the first tip — the “Befriend a dog” post. You may have to exit [News] and restart to refresh the feed.
- Open the news post “Befriend a dog with these free, in-game treats for Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild“.
- Scroll down and select “Start Software“.
- When you’re in-game, you’ll get three items — Raw Meat or Apples!
- These items are (supposed!) to be used to befriend dogs. Give a dog three items — either fruit or meat — and they’ll show you a hidden treasure location!
Yeah, apples and raw meat are super easy to find on your own in-game, but the tips channel might offer even more special rewards as new articles (and tips) are posted.
- Requirements:
- The paraglider must be unlocked for items to appear in your game.
- Only available if you’ve updated to version 1.3.1 or above.
- Items will not spawn in certain locations — inside shrines, dungeons, or extreme terrain.
