Final Fantasy 16: Weird Science Side Quest Guide

July 14, 2023 by Peter Hunt Szpytek

Well that’s an excellent upgrade.

Many of the side quests in Final Fantasy 16 are boring and offer little in terms of substantial rewards. Luckily, the game distinguishes which ones are actually worth doing by adding a plus symbol to the side quest marker. These quests tend to be a bit more substantial and offer excellent, useful rewards.

The Weird Science side quest gives players a great upgrade in the form of an upgraded potion satchel that allows Clive to carry more consumable items like potions and tonics. Since this will drastically increase your survivability in even the toughest of Final Fantasy 16‘s fights, it’s a quest that’s well worth doing.

Here’s everything you need to know about how to complete the Weird Science side quest and find the Bomb King notorious mark in Final Fantasy 16.

How to Start the Weird Science Side Quest

Players won’t have access to the Weird Science side quest until after completing the Letting Off Steam main quests that take place after Clive has his final confrontation with Titan. To start the quest, return to the Hideaway at the start of the Out of the Shadow main mission and speak with Owain, Engineer in Mid’s Dungeon.

Weird Science Quest Guide

When you talk with Owain the engineer in Mid’s Dungeon in the Hideaway, he’ll tell you that he needs help with acquiring a filter to make medicine. Accept the quest and Owain will tell you that he needs bomb ash, but you’ll need to kill a dangerous Bomb in order to get the ash.

Head to the Hunt board and talk with Nektar the moogle. Ask it about bomb sightings and look at the Hunt Board entry for the Bomb King. The entry will say that the monster is located in the Crock in Sanbreque in the ruins of a fallen airship.

Bomb King Location

Fast travel to the Dragon’s Aery Obelisk and follow the path that leads to the Imperial Chase. Follow the path southeast until you come to a fork in the road and take the road that leads north instead of going toward the abandoned house to the east.

At the end of the path leading north, you’ll come face-to-face with the Bomb King. Take out the notorious mark (it’s a relatively easy fight as long as you take care to run out of the way anytime the bomb uses any of its AoE attacks.) Because the Bomb King will summon other bombs during the fight, it’s also not a bad idea to use any AoE Eikon abilities that you have in your arsenal as well.

With the Bomb King defeated, collect the Bomb Ash that’s been scattered around the boss arena. There are three piles to pick up, so once you’ve gotten all three, fast-travel back to the hideaway.

Speak with Owain in Mel’s Dungeon once more and give him the three Bomb Ash piles you collected. After you’ve given it to him, Owain will use it to make the Telamon Alembic, a device that improves medicine. As a way of saying thanks, Owain will improve your bag to allow you to hold more consumable items. With the Treated Potion Satchel, you’ll now be able to hold six regular Potions, four High Potions, three Strength tonics, and three Stoneskin tonics.
