If you’re looking for a different kind of challenge, you might want to check out the Fields of Hatred. Learn how to unlock PVP in Diablo 4 with our guide, showing you where to find the Extraction game mode in the open world map. You’ll never need to visit this Act 3 area during the story, but due to level-scaling your hero is free to travel to the bloody fields and mark it on your map for future adventures.
The Fields of Hatred is essentially an Extraction mode. By fighting enemies, you’ll get a special resource that can only be extracted from four specific nodes on the map. Activating these nodes will alert nearby players, forcing you to fight the enemies back until the timer runs out. There are plenty of multiplayer games that follow this basic structure, but there’s a little more you’ll want to know here.
Check out the full breakdown for the Fields of Hatred below.

How To Unlock PVP
In the Dry Steppes region, travel to the southwest to find an area called the Fields of Hatred. The large area is marked light red on your map. This is the PVP zone — entering this area allows you to fight other players. Instead of looting them, you’ll fight over a special resource called Seeds of Hatred.
To learn more about the PVP mode, travel to the town of Alzuuda in the west. There is a waypoint here and several unique vendors that sell items you can only be purchased with processed Seeds of Hatred. The PVP currency is called Red Dust.
Another smaller PVP area is located in southern Kehjistan. This is another Fields of Hatred area.
How Fields of Hatred PVP Works
The Fields of Hatred is an Extraction PVP mode — your goal is to defeat monsters, clear World Events, and kill bosses to collect Seeds of Hatred. After collecting the seeds, you’ll need to use an Altar of Extraction in the PVP zone. There are four ritual sites. After initiating a ritual, a message will appear and alert all players in the area. A timer will appear over the ritual site on the map.
Players that are Bloodmarked will be able to battle in this region. Killing another player will cause them to drop all the Seeds of Hatred they’ve collected. The only loss in PVP is in Seeds of Hatred — other gear and loot won’t drop. This is just about the Seeds. Learn more about the Extraction zone PVP gameplay below.
- Basics of Fields of Hatred PVP:
- Seeds of Hatred can be obtained from monsters, events and chests. Dropped seeds can be picked up by anyone. Seeds are dropped upon death and completely purged when leaving the PVP area.
- Turn Seeds of Hatred into permanent Red Dust by performing Purification Rituals. Red Dust is used at various vendors within town.
- Mark for Blood by opening the Emote Menu and selecting the Bloodmarked wheel option. Once Bloodmarked, you can attack other players.
- Bloodmark can be removed by using an Altar of Cleansing found in town.
- Defeat players while Bloodmarked to become Hatred’s Chosen. While Hatred’s Chosen, your position is revealed to all players in the area and you cannot perform rituals at Altars of Extraction. Survive to receive powerful rewards. Hatred’s Chosen is forfeited when entering town or leaving the area.
What To Do With Red Dust
Red Dust is traded at the vendors in Alzuuda for unique rewards. The southern PVP area also features many merchants with unique goods for trade.
- Cursed Scrolls: Gantul sells special scrolls that give temporary buffs to players. These scrolls are only active in the Fields of Hatred zone.
- Mount Cosmetics: Fariba the Stable Merchant sells Unconventional Mount Cosmetics. You can add skeletons, flags, and other unique cosmetics for your mount.
- Purveyor of Oddities: The gambling vendor in Azuula trades in armor only. You can get enhanced random rolls for high tier gear by trading 3,000 Red Dust for Caps, Tunics, Gloves, Boots or Pants.
- Transmog Cosmetics: Fatin sells class-specific PVP cosmetics at his Odds and Ends store. These transmog appearances are extremely expensive — each costs 60,000-90,000 Red Dust.
Red Dust is yet another way to roll for rare loot. You’ll need to collect a lot, but this method is another you can put into your endgame farming rotation.
