One of the major themes of The Last of Us Part 1 revolves around picking up the pieces of a world lost to the infection. This is no better illustrated than in the various notes and other artifacts that Joel and Ellie discover as they make their trek across the country in search of the Fireflies. The chapter “The Suburbs” is full of that sort of storytelling as you find all sorts of clues about the lives of the people who used to live just outside of Pittsburgh.
There are a lot of artifacts to find in “The Suburbs” that tell the tragic story of Ish the sailor but, luckily, they’re completely optional if you’re looking to progress through the main story of the game. That said, if you’re going for the platinum for The Last of Us Part 1, you’ll need to snag them all for the “Chronicles” trophy. There are plenty to find and some are easy to miss, so make sure you keep your eyes peeled and follow the guide below.

Sewers
#1: As soon as you wash up on the shores with Sam and Henry, you’ll have the chance to explore the beaches. You’ll eventually come across a beached fishing boat. Hop aboard (Ellie will comment on how she’s never been on a boat before) and go inside the cabin. Walk up some stairs and to your immediate left you’ll find a handwritten note.
#2: Once you’re in the sewers, you’ll get to a fork in the road. Henry and Sam will go left and Joel and Ellie should go right. Hop over the downed yellow pipe and walk up a ramp. On your right side, you’ll see a vent that can be interacted with. After hitting the button prompt, Joel will open the vent and Ellie will crawl through and then open the blocked door right next to him. Go inside the room, walk up the steps, and on the table in back you’ll find a note.
#3: Progress through the level until you find a room with a giant yellow crank that Henry will try to pull but to no avail. Dive down under the water and pull the debris out that’s blocking the mechanism and Henry will try again. Swim through the now-open gate and climb the ladder on the left side of the room after getting back on dry land. Instead of going to the left to drop down the pallet after climbing up as the critical path wants you to do, open the white door on the right. Be warned, there are two clickers inside so make sure you’ve got a loaded weapon. Take care of the clickers and then follow the path of the room to the end and you’ll find a note in the corner.
#4: After entering Ish’s former hideout in the sewers, you’ll face off against a handful of infected. Instead of vaulting over the barricade where they came from to progress, go up the stairs on the right side of the room. Once you’ve gotten to the top, head to the right and you’ll find a note on the corner of a table near a body.
#5: Vault over the barricade and walk up the two sets of stairs. Some rats will run by, but keep your eyes on the left side of the passage as you’ll find a closed door. Open the door and approach the body that’s in the left corner of the room. Next to it will be a harrowing note.
#6: After clearing out a bunch of clickers with Sam, you’ll find an area that has a makeshift classroom. On a shelf in front of the blackboard, you’ll find a child’s drawing.
Suburbs
#1: When you finally get out of the sewers and into the streets, you’ll quickly come across a handful of houses all in a row. Head inside the house to the left of the blue house and go upstairs into the bedroom to the left of the bathroom. Inside, you’ll find a note on top of some drawers.
#2: As you continue walking down the streets of the suburb, you’ll see a broken-down pickup truck on the left near a garage with a workbench. To the right of the garage is a red brick house. Go inside the house and up to its second floor. Head through the first door on the left once you’re upstairs and you’ll find a note on a desk.
#3: Continue down the street and go into the house directly across from the ice cream truck on the left. Go up the stairs towards the back of the house and enter the first door on the left when you make it to the second-floor landing. Inside the room, you’ll find a note in the corner on the floor.
#4: After finding the note in the bedroom, head back to the stairs and go as high as you can into the attic. Directly on your right as you get to the top of the stairs, you’ll find a matchbook to pick up which holds the combination for the safe in the room where you find the note on the second floor: 08-21-36.
