By the time they make it to Pittsburgh in The Last of Us Part 1, Joel and Ellie have built up something of a rapport. They’re not completely on the same page about everything, as seen during their frequent arguments, however, their dynamic is certainly coming along. This is no clearer than during the optional conversations that you can access between the two.
The conversations are, by name, optional, so don’t worry if you don’t find them all, but they do provide plenty of characterization for both characters and give each a little bit more depth. If you’re looking to platinum the game, however, you’ll need to find everyone to unlock the “Getting to Know You” trophy.
If you’re looking for a guide on where to find all of Ellie’s optional jokes, take a look right here.

Alone and Forsaken
#1: After you break into the looter’s garage by opening the garage door, you’ll find yourself in a harrowing room full of dead bodies and the clothes taken off of other survivors that the looters got to. Ellie will walk over to a pile of clothes in the center of the room and the conversation prompt will appear over her.
#2: After seeing the bridge in the distance, Joel and Ellie will jump down into the busted-up streets of the city. Continue along the main path until you pass a city bus that you’ll need to walk around. A little way down the road from the bus in the direction of the main path, you’ll see a car on the right side of the road with a rotting corpse laying next to its open driver’s seat door. Ellie will walk over (it might take a minute for her to catch up depending on how quickly you get there) and start to look at it. Once she does, you’ll be prompted to talk with her.
#3: Make your way through the level until you find the abandoned checkpoint (there are plenty of bandits around, but Ellie will remark that it’s strange to see a checkpoint without any Fedra soldiers at it.) As soon as you enter the area, but before you actually enter the checkpoint, look for the graffiti on the wall that reads “Stop feeding us *BLANK* give us our rations!” Ellie will walk over and you can speak with her after she reads the graffiti.
#4: After hiding behind a taxi from some bandits in a cutscene, turn around and walk over to the busted-up storefront that has some knocked-over mannequins and a large poster of a fashion model. Ellie will walk over and comment on the poster which then prompts you to talk with her.
Hotel Lobby
#1: Once you’re inside the hotel, Joel and Ellie will be forced to find a way around the debris blocking the main central staircase. Head to the left around a green and gray tarped-off area and then to the right into a coffee bar. Behind the bar, you’ll see a fancy coffee maker and be prompted to talk about it.
#2: After fighting off all of the bandits in the hotel, head to the third floor. Look for signs pointing to room 304. Follow the halls to the right from the main combat area and you’ll eventually find the room. Go inside and look in the bathroom, there will be two rotting corpses that Ellie will comment on. Once she does, you’ll be prompted to speak with her.
#3: A little ways after the scene where Ellie saves Joel from the bandit, you’ll come across a luxurious banquet hall. On the right side of the room, you’ll find a photo backdrop. Ellie will walk over and you can talk to her. She’ll have three conversations indicators for that one spot, so make sure you stick around and complete the conversation in full before moving on.
Financial District
#1: After taking care of the bandits that show up following the scene where Joel gives Ellie a gun for the first time, she’ll rejoin you in the streets. When she makes it to you, go to the body that’s strung up by a tree and you’ll see a conversation prompt.
#2: Make your way through the streets after seeing the machine gun truck and you’ll eventually come across a corner building labeled “Ration Depot” that sits in between two abandoned tanks. Across from the depot, there will be a few rotting corpses that Ellie will investigate and you’ll be prompted to talk with her.
#3: After boosting Ellie up to reach a fire escape ladder and climbing over it with her, you’ll jump down into a new area. On your right, you’ll see a sign for a military prep school. Ellie will look at the sign and you’ll be prompted to speak with her.
#4: Directly across from the school sign, you’ll find a large poster for a movie called “Dawn of the Wolf Part 2” by some abandoned trucks in an alley parking lot. When Ellie walks over, you’ll be able to talk with her.
Escape the City
