Pittsburgh is a lengthy section of The Last of Us Part 1 where Joel and Ellie continue looking for a safe place to take Ellie. Like the rest of the chapters in the game, there are a lot of collectibles to be found hidden away off the beaten path. While the hidden artifacts are completely unnecessary for completing the game, they do provide a lot of context and background for the events of its story.
Additionally, if you’re looking to platinum The Last of Us Part 1, you’ll need to find every single artifact and note to unlock the “Chronicles” trophy. While finding everything that the game has hidden away is certainly a tall order, it’s not too tough if you know where to look…or just follow our guide.

Alone and Forsaken
#1: Like the very first artifacts you found at the start of the game, the first artifact in Pittsburgh is already in your bag. The Siphon Hose was used for Joel and Ellie to get gas so it makes sense that Joel would be holding onto it. It’s automatically in your bag, so to access it hit the touchpad, tab over to the artifacts and notes, and then select the Siphon Hose.
#2: When you make it into the looter’s garage full of bodies and looted clothes, you’ll find a clipboard in the far corner of the room across from the garage door you entered from.
#3: Head upstairs after looting the garage and walk all the way down the hallway. The main path would have you take the door at the end on the left, but you’ll find a map pinned to the wall in the room at the very end of the hall. Enter the room and it’ll be nailed up on the wall next to the door you entered from.
#4: You’ll eventually make your way to a seemingly abandoned Fedra checkpoint. Ellie will remark that she’s never seen one without any soldiers in it and to the right of the entrance to the checkpoint, you’ll see some graffiti that says “Stop feeding us *BLANK* give us our rations!” You can initiate an optional conversation here, but there’s also a hidden artifact. Hop over the sandbag wall and walk into the rundown booth that’s right next to the graffiti. A note will be on the floor of the booth.
#5: As you get deeper into the checkpoint, you’ll come across a section that’s sheltered by a large green tent that spans the entire width of the street. If you stand under the tent and look back in the direction you came from, you’ll see a poster of Fedra traitors taped to the temporary walls. Head over and pick it up.
#6: After dealing with the bandits in at the Fedra checkpoint, head into the large bookstore on the right side of the street. In the corner of the building closest to the checkpoint entrance, you’ll find stairs leading to the upstairs area of the store. Underneath the stairs, there are two bookshelves forming an L-shape. On one of the shelves, you’ll find a note.
#7: Once you’ve grabbed the note under the stairs, follow the wall that runs perpendicular to the street and you’ll find yourself outside the book store’s employee break room. Hop inside through the broken window and on the counter next to some coffee machines, you’ll find another note.
#8: This artifact requires you to have a shiv on hand to unlock a door. Head to the top level of the bookstore and in one of the corners of the building, you’ll find a bathroom that’s locked. Use a shiv to open the door and inside you’ll find a map.
#9: Like the previous artifact, this one also requires you to have a shiv to access. As you continue through the chapter, you’ll eventually watch a cutscene where Joel and Ellie hide behind a yellow taxi to avoid being spotted by some bandits. As soon as the cinematic is over, walk to your left and you’ll see a locked door that has a red “X” spray-painted onto it. Unlock the door with a shiv and then grab the note that’s sitting directly across from the door on a yellow chair.
#10: After getting through the shiv door, head back out to the main area and jump into the water that’s part of the critical path. Start swimming towards the area where you saw the bandits in the cutscene and then into the truck that has its doors semi-open. Swim through the truck and into the building that’s on the other side and then to the stairs that lead up to the unflooded floors above. Run up the stairs and to the second floor where you’ll find that it’s laid out in an “L” shape. Walk to the other side of the room and you’ll find a note sitting on a coffee bar. Next to it is a shiv that you can use to access the previous artifact if you didn’t have enough crafting resources to get inside.
Hotel Lobby
#1: Grab the ladder on the left side of the room once you’re in the partially flooded hotel lobby and place it on the closest available wall. Climb up the ladder and then head right. You’ll be able to shimmy your way across the broken area of the central staircase and on the other side you’ll find a note inside a suitcase. The note also contains a safe combination: 22-10-56.
#2: After falling into the depths of the hotel, you’ll find yourself needing a key card to escape the lurkers. Go to the central area and then walk up the main ramp. Head right and go into the room and walk through it, taking the first door on the right and then continue forward across the hall into the security room with all the TVs. On the desk inside, you’ll find the hotel security keycard.
Financial District
#1: After taking care of the bandits following the scene where Joel gives Ellie a rifle to cover him, head to the sandwich shop on the right side of the area. Follow the trail of blood in the backroom and you’ll find a note on the ground.
#2: After the cutscene where you see the truck with the machine gun for the first time, you’ll find yourself walking through the Bank of Meridian. After taking care of the bandits inside, head straight past the logo of the bank on your right side where you walked in and into some offices with lots of windows. In the far corner to your left when you walk in, you’ll find a note tucked away on the ground.
#3: As you progress back into the streets, you’ll notice a building that has some fires raging inside it to the right of a military surplus store that’s packed with bandits. The door to the building is partially obscured by a cop car, so walk around it and into the building. Head up the first flight of stairs and into the offices above. Pass the flaming barrel on your right and you’ll find a room with an “L” shaped desk on your right. Behind the desk, you’ll find a small note.
#4: Make your way through the streets of the city and you’ll find a corner building between two tanks labeled “Ration Depot.” Head inside the building and on the right side of the room you’ll find a note on a desk next to a large blood stain on the wall.
Escape the City
#1: After Sam and Henry take you through a building and across some rooftops to get back into another building through a fire escape, Henry will hold a door open for you that leads to a large office space that prominently features a globe right when you walk through the door. Continue forward and go into the door directly across from where you entered. You’ll find yourself inside a conference room and in the corner, a note.
