Dungeons are not created equal. If you want to farm the best dungeons in Diablo 4, you’ll want to target the dungeons listed below — each dungeon is ranked based on how efficient XP is earned. After recent patches, Diablo 4 Nightmare Dungeons are your best XP farming option. Regular dungeons are still okay for early game leveling, but you’re much better off unlocking Nightmare Dungeons ASAP.

If you want to learn how to reset Nightmare Dungeons for farming, check out our guide right here. Or get our straight-up recommendations for best Nightmare Dungeons here.

Dungeons & Nightmare Dungeons Explained

Before getting into the list, here’s a quick overview of Dungeons and Nightmare Dungeons. There are important distinctions you need to know!

  • Dungeons are marked on your map. These are optional areas where you must complete an objective then battle a boss monster.
  • Defeat the boss to unlock a permanent Aspect that can be used for crafting. Each Dungeons has a different Aspect — cursor over the dungeon icon on the map to learn what you’ll unlock.
  • All dungeons are available at the start of the game. Dungeons scale with your level.
  • Nightmare Dungeons are endgame activities. Nightmare Dungeons unlock on World Tier 3 — this difficulty is unlocked after completing the Capstone Dungeon that appears after finishing the main story. The main story only needs to be completed once — all future characters will automatically unlock WT3.
  • Nightmare Dungeons are tougher versions of standard dungeons designed specifically for loot farming and leveling up by earning XP.
  • Nightmare Dungeons are unlocked by earning Nightmare Sigils. Sigils can drop from any number of activities, but are more likely to drop from WT3-4 exclusive activities like Whispers quests, Helltides, Nightmare Dungeons and more.
  • Nightmare Sigils can only be used once. Switching Nightmare Sigils will change the active Nightmare Dungeon and consume the previous sigil. Only one Nightmare Dungeon can be active at a time.
  • Sigils can be crafted after completing a Tier 3 Nightmare Dungeon. This unlocks the crafting function at the Occultist vendor.

Nightmare Sigils eventually become abundantly plentiful at higher levels of World Tier 3 and World Tier 4. You’ll have plenty of Nightmare Dungeons to pick from. Here are the dungeons you’ll want to play through first.

Dungeons Tier List | Best & Worst Dungeons

Dungeons are judged on a number of factors: enemy density, layout, length and completion efficiency. After finally exploring all the dungeons, here are our picks for the best and worst. Generally, you’ll want to stick to completing S or A ranked dungeons. These are the most densely populated with enemies and give huge rewards.

PSA: To get the most out of Nightmare Dungeons, you’ll want to aim for Tiers / WT where enemies are +3 Levels above you. That way you’ll get maximum efficiency when fighting enemies — you can defeat them handily without wasting too much time and still get big XP or loot rewards.

Tier Dungeon
SBlind Burrows, Champion’s Demise, Renegade’s Retreat, Earthen Wound, Sunken Ruins
AAldurwood, Crusader’s Cathedral, Dark Ravine, Guulrahn Canals, Kor Dragan Barracks, Maugan’s Works, Maulwood, Raethwind Wilds, Onyx Hold, Serpent’s Lair, Shivta Ruins, Witchwater
BAbandoned Mineworks, Ancient’s Lament, Cultist Refuge, Demon’s Wake, Lost Archives, Prison of Caldeum, Whispering Pines, Zenith
FBlack Asylum, Conclave, Ferals’ Den, Guulrahn Slums, Shadowed Plunge

Please note that all dungeons are ranked by their Nightmare Dungeon version. Standard dungeons are not worth farming and therefore aren’t ranked. I recommend playing through every standard dungeon at least once to unlock every Codex of Power.
