The Gunner Specialization is the first new powerset to come to The Division 2, and it’s pretty unique. It changes the way you play — giving you a powerful minigun that can knock enemies out of cover. While using the minigun, you’re stuck standing upright and can’t take cover, making you way more vulnerable. It’s a risk-reward mechanic that’s very exciting, and actually unlocking the Gunner is a huge undertaking.
NOTE: Year 1 Season Pass owners will unlock the Gunner Specialization instantly. No quest required.
The first three Specializations were unlocking simply by completing the main campaign. This specialization requires five levels of challenge — you’ll need to complete five sets of objectives, and thankfully unlocking the Gunner once is all that’s required. Once the Gunner is unlocked, it is unlocked on every character on your account. You won’t need to finish these objectives more than once.

Below, I’ll explain how to complete some of these objectives — most of them are straightforward, a few of them are bugged, and there’s a way you can more easily complete some of the trickier ones.

How To Unlock The Gunner Specialization | Minigun Guide
Return to the White House Base of Operations to begin the Gunner Specializations quest. For this quest, you’ll need to complete 5 stages — there are multiple objectives in each stage, and each one can be pretty annoying. Let’s go through all the stages to make your life (slightly) easier.
Stage 1: Sharpshooter Specialization
Downtown West Sharpshooter: Capture all Downtown West CPs with the Sharpshooter Specialization active. You’ll need to capture ALL Of them with Sharpshooter — including the ones that were captured before (if) you just recently swapped to Sharpshooter.
Shocking Roach: Shock Roach twice before defeating him in Bank Headquarters. You can find Shock Ammo, or just select a power that will shock the boss. Make sure you have a shock ability equipped before starting the Bank HQ — you can play on Normal.
Marksman Rescue: Complete 5 Public Executions using only a Marksman Rifle. Shouldn’t be too challenging — travel around the area, equip your best MMR, and clear Public Executions. Don’t use the Chem Launcher — or any other abilities.
Mounted Gunnery: Defeat enemies in the Grand Washington Hotel using the mounted gun. There is a turret emplacement on the top floor courtyard — you can farm kills by dying and respawning here.
Stage 2: Survivalist Specialization
Southwest Survivalist: Like before, swap to the Survivalist Specialization and capture all outposts in the Southwest region. All of them — even the ones that were green.
Burning Kelly: Burn Kelly three times before killing him in the Air & Space Museum mission. As a Survivalist, you’ll get fire grenades — but they’re too powerful on Normal! Collect Incendiary Ammo in the hall after the Mars Exhibit.
Foam Party: Equip the Foam Chem Launcher during the Air & Space Museum and use it constantly to easily complete this objective. This can also be completely anywhere — including the Shooting Range!
Shotgun Surprise: Use a Shotgun to complete Propaganda Broadcast activities. This one is tricky — and for some reason, you’ll want to unequip any Chem Launcher and not use any other abilities.
Stage 3: Demolitionist Specialization
Downtown Demolitionist: Capture all Downtown region CPs with the Demolitionist Specialization. Just like before, you have to capture them all — thankfully, you can complete them at Alert Level 1.
Show Me Wade: Break Wade’s helmet before defeating him in the ViewPoint Museum mission. Simply shoot his helmet off before killing him to earn this objective.
This Is Madness: Defeat enemies while they’re confused — this can be tricky. Focus on Hyenas. Shooting the Rusher’s weak point releases green confusion gas. Shooting enemies in this state counts toward your objective. You can farm the Grand Washington Hotel for confusion kills on Hyenas.
Convoy Chaos: Use only an SMG to complete 5 Resource Convoy activities. Like before, you can’t use Chem Launchers or skills. They count as guns.
Stage 4: Any Specialization
No Support: Kill General Ridgeway, the final boss of the Capitol Stronghold, without using any Armor Kits. I recommend playing on a full team on Normal — you’ll clear the final boss easily. Just use healing abilities instead.
Roaming Gunners: Kill roaming heavy weapons enemies in the environment. True Sons LMG soldiers that take cover count toward this objective.
We’ve Got A Pulse: Equip the Pulse ability and kill enemies highlighted. You can do this anywhere, and it only works while the enemies are highlighted. Just roam around and shoot enemies — have it equipped while hunting Gunners.
This Land Is My Land: Use an Assault Rifle to clear 5 territory control activities. You can only use an AR, and you’re not allowed to use abilities or have a chem launcher equipped.
Stage 5: Any Specialization
Mounted Guns: Use Mounted Guns in the open world to defeat enemies. Very easy — many CPs have mounted guns. Just find one and die when reinforcements are attacking. You can farm it over and over! Or just find alternate CPs.
Light Gunnery: Complete 5 Control Point objectives with only the LMG. Same as always — unequip Chem Launchers, don’t use abilities, and only use an LMG.
Roosevelt Roundup: Use mounted weapons to score kills on the Roosevelt Island Stronghold. You can do this solo — reach the ‘Rescue Angela Woods’ and you’ll find a minigun turret. Use it to clear the area, and die to the last enemy to reset the checkpoint.
Turned To Stone: Easily the hardest objective. You need to destroy all pieces of the Basilisk boss’ armor before killing him. He is a heavy melee enemy that appears near the end of the Roosevelt Island Stronghold. He has six armor pieces — head, left arm, right arm, torso, left leg, and right leg. You need to break them all. Even if it appears some of the pieces are gone, you need to shoot them all anyway. Using a pistol will help if you’re playing on Normal — you need to do the least damage possible to break the armor without killing Basilisk.
Complete all of these objectives, and the Gunner Specialization will be unlocked! Now you can use your own heavy minigun against enemies — and it unlocks for every character on your account. You never have to complete these objectives again.
