Zorah Magdaros, the massive Elder Dragon you’re chasing in Monster Hunter: World provides some of the best end-game gear, if you can scrounge up enough rare materials off this truly massive monster.
Each battle against Zorah Magdaros is unique. Thanks to his titanic size, you won’t just fight it like any normal large monster. This guy is the size of a mountain, so that won’t exactly work. That’s why hunting Zorah Magdaros is also one of the slowest grinds in the game. Made even worse by the fact his armor is so invaluable for end-game hunts.
The Zorah Magdaros Armor Set and weapons are only available once you’ve unlocked the High Rank quests. Following this method, you’ll also get a whole lot of zenny — and get enough Zorah Magdaros chunks to build what you need.

Zorah Magdaros armor has high fire protection, making it pretty invaluable for certain High Rank hunts. Zorah Magdaros is also one of the most annoying monsters to ‘hunt’ — you can’t just fight him.
Complete the ‘A Colossal Task‘ assignment and you’ll reach Hunter Rank 11, unlocking the High Rank quests and putting you directly in the end game. Now you’ll be able to farm Zorah Magdaros, and there’s one efficient way to do it.
- Zorah Magdaros Farming – The Basics
- Any Zorah Magdaros mission will drop monster materials, but the final assignment, ‘A Colossal Task’ provides the most, easily.
- ‘A Colossal Task’ quest will randomly appear on your quest board. There’s a chance it will appear at any time after returning from a quest and resetting the board, but it’s pretty rare.
- There’s a way to get around this limitation — SOS Flares. Use the online SOS system to quickly and easily farm this mission.
You’ll still earn lots of rewards when helping other players, and many, many players will be using SOS Flares in the against Zorah Magdaros. We recommend you get in on this little trick now while the game is still popular. In a year or two, it might not be so easy to farm.
[NOTE: Use a daily voucher to increase your rare loot drops. You can earn double the materials if you’re lucky.]
- How to Farm Zorah Magdaris – Step-by-Step
- Join / Start an Online Session.
- Go to the Quest Counter and ‘Join a Quest’.
- Select ‘Respond to SOS’ and set the Target to Zorah Magdaros.
- Search! Make sure Quest Type is ‘No Preference’.
- Go to the Optional Tab — you should get ‘Left Quite the Impression’.
- This is the optional quest that will randomly appear on your board. It is identical to the final battle against Zorah Magdaros.
- On Zorah, make sure to farm all the mining outcrops you can. The outcrops will repopulate after a few minutes, too.
- Mining the outcrops will get you Dragonite Ore and Zorah Carapace.
- When attacking the cores, check for monster materials that drop. Also watch the falling rocks — those can also drop monster material.
- To damage Zorah faster, use the slinger and launch rocks at the trapped stalactites. They’ll explode and damage Zorah — when the large monster appears, damaging Zorah enough will cause it to retreat so you don’t have to waste time fighting it.
- In the third phase, aim for the face to smash his rocky jowels / jaw region. When it cracks, you’ll get bonus rare materials. Remember — you can load a cannon with up to 5 shots. You don’t need to reload after every shot.
