The real Diablo 4 begins after you finish the campaign. Everything Blizzard fans want — huge world events, repeatable hunts, and difficult dungeons — are all found in the endgame. You can’t even begin hunting for the highest tier loot until you’ve unlocked the top World Tier difficulties. At World Tier 3 you’ll unlock new Sacred rarity items. These items are above even Unique gear. If you’re aiming to truly optimize your build, here are the basic methods for farming.
Unfortunately, the endgame isn’t nearly as structured or easy-to-navigate as the standard campaign. Much of the endgame content is extremely randomized — Whispers of the Tree is a hunting event that resets periodically, while Nightmare Dungeons are totally random and only unlock after finding rare Sigils. Not only are the events random, but the rewards are too. Depending on what activities you complete, it is possible to aim for the items you want most. Learn all about the most efficient farming methods below.

Farming Legendary & Unique Loot
Before you start farming, you’ll need to fully understand the World Tier system. World Tiers are difficulty levels. The higher your World Tier, the more likely you’ll get incredible gear. Sacred items are only available on World Tier 3 and World Tier 4.
- How To Unlock World Tiers
- World Tier 3: Unlock by completing the Cathedral of Light Capstone Dungeon. Only available after completing the main story and in World Tier 2. Recommended Level 50.
- World Tier 4: Unlock by completing the Fallen Temple Capstone Dungeon. Only available in World Tier 3. Recommended Level 70.
Remember, Capstone Dungeons can be completed after finishing the story, and the recommended level is not a hard limit. You can be severely under-leveled and still complete these dungeons solo. Join a party and they’re much easier.
Nightmare Dungeons
An efficient endgame method for Unique or Sacred loot hunting. Nightmare Dungeons don’t unlock immediately after completing the story. You’ll need to continue playing on World Tier 3. While you wait for these activities to unlock, complete Whispers of the Dead or enter red areas on the map to take on Helltides.
- Nightmare Dungeons are hard versions of current dungeons that unlock at Level 53. Once you are fighting enemies at Level 53 — or on World Tier 3 — Nightmare Sigils will drop from activities like Helltides and Whispers of the Dead. The World Boss will also drop Nightmare Sigils.
- A Sigil gives you access to a particular Nightmare Dungeon. Each Sigil is connected to just one Dungeon.
- Nightmare Dungeons are more difficult but offer much bigger rewards. Nightmare Dungeons are one of the best ways to farm for Unique or Sacred loot on World Tier 3 — and because of the level requirement, they can only be accessed after unlocking this World Tier.
Whispers of the Dead
Completing Nightmare Dungeons is quick and much more efficient than Helltides, but the loot is completely random. If you want to aim for specific types of loot, you’ll need to complete these activities.
- One of the better ways to hunt for rare loot. Whispers of the Dead is a special activity that only becomes available after completing the story. NG+ unlocks this feature automatically.
- By completing Whispers of the Dead activities marked on your map, you’ll earn Grim Favors. Fill your meter with 10 Grim Favors and return to the Tree of Whispers to request a cache.
- The caches give you specific types of loot. This makes getting a certain weapon or armor much easier. Aim for what you want!
Murmuring Obols & Purveyor of Curiosities
The Tree of Whispers is the better method for farming specific types of items, but the standard Murmuring Obols are still worth spending even in the endgame. You’ll be running into plenty of World Events while exploring the map, so might as well spend the Obols you’re earning. On higher World Tiers, you’re much more likely to get Legendary or better loot.
- Murmuring Obols are rewarded for completing any of the World Events you’ll encounter while exploring the map. Any orange circle area is a World Event.
- World Events are incredibly common and appear all over the map. The circle will only appear if you’re relatively nearby. These events are always in the same locations, so once you find one, you can repeat it. They repeat often.
- You can only carry 500 Obols total. Spend the Obols at any Purveyor of Curiosities vendor. They are often located in large cities. These NPCs allow you to purchase a random roll on specific types of equipment — helmets, chest armor, boots, gloves, swords, scythes, bows, etc. You can choose a specific type of gear and roll.
Each roll costs Obols. You’ll be rewarded with 1 item of the type you selected. Keep rolling until you get something good, or you run out of Obols. There’s no reason to keep them!
Getting gear is actually pretty simple in Diablo 4. Specific dungeons are only important for the Codex of Power they contain — so you’ll only want to complete certain dungeons if you have the matching class. Unfortuntely, you don’t get to choose when Sigils start dropping for Nightmare Dungeons. It’s all random. Just like hunting for rare loot.
