Before you can complete the Ula’ula Grand Trial and leave the island in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, there’s a pretty big hiccup — instead of fighting the Kahuna, you’ll have to invade Po Town. That’s Team Skull’s home turf, an abandoned high class community that’s fallen into disrepair in the northwestern reaches of Ula’ula.
There’s an army of Team Skull Grunts between you and Guzma, and a few puzzles to solve. This is just the first story-centric step on our journey, and next time things will be even further off the beaten path. Eventually we’ll be able to return and earn the Grand Trial Completion Badge, but we’ve got some Pokémon to save from Team Skull first.

Walkthrough | Part 9: Team Skull Boss Guzma
Now that you’ve completed the spooky Thrifty Megamart trial, it’s time to take on Nanu’s Grand Trial. Before the big fight, you’ll have to take down Team Skull in their hometown. Po Town, an abandoned walled-off resort town, is jam-packed with Team Skull Grunts. It’s a tough fight, but there’s plenty of XP to go around before fighting Nanu’s team of Dark Type Pokémon.
First, take a trip up to Aether House. Right off the bat, you’ll have to defeat Plumeria.
- Battle: Team Skull Admin Plumeria
- Team: Lvl. 37 Golbat, Lvl. 37 Salazzle
After the fight, you’ll begin a mission to infiltrate Po Town. A kid will reward you with Rare Candy, too. Leave and go west to the beach, left of Aether House on Route 15. There’s a stranger with a kimono. Talk to him and you’ll get the Sharpedo Ride Pager. Now you can break through rocks in the water!
Use Sharpedo to bust through the rocks south of the Route 15 beach, then swim up and through the rocky breakers to Route 16. There’s a PokeCenter up and off the beach you can use to heal and restock. There are more trainers in the small Ula’ula Meadow area, which leads to the road to Po Town.
Po Town – Team Skull HQ
Before you can actually enter Po Town, you’ll have to fight a pair of Grunts waiting at the front door. You’ll have to fight lots of Grunts as you explore Po Town, so we’ll list all the required fights, and the levels of each Pokémon encounter.
- Battle: Team Skull Grunts
- Team: Lvl. 36 Scraggy, Lvl. 36 Pawniard
Nanu the Police Officer will let you inside Po Town. The rainswept neighborhood is completely controlled by Team Skull. To get by the first gate, go under the fence to the left. Through the gate, you’ll encounter another Team Skull Grunt. Defeating the Grunts at the barricade will clear the path.
- Battle: Team Skull Grunt
- Team: Lvl. 36 Spinarak
- Battle: Team Skull Grunt
- Team: Lvl. 36 Trubbish
First thing’s first — enter the abandoned PokeCenter in Po Town and pay $10 to heal your Pokémon. Come back here if you ever need to heal while clearing the rest of Po Town.
To get through the second barricade, slip under the hedge to the left. There’s a Grunt patrolling at the wall. Another is standing on the truck, and you’ll absolutely have to fight him.
- Battle: Team Skull Grunt
- Team: Lvl. 37 Drowzee
- Battle: Team Skull Grunt
- Team: Lvl. 37 Ekans, Lvl. 37 Salandit
Next, we’ll need to get through the last barricade that leads to the big mansion where Guzma is located. Use the fallen chunk of the fence like a ramp to drop into the mansion’s front yard. Watch out for the patrolling Grunt!
- Battle: Team Skull Grunt
- Team: Lvl. 37 Fomantis, Lvl. 37 Mareanie
Next up, you’ll want to invade the mansion itself. This place is dense with enemy Grunts patrolling the hallways and hanging around inside the side-rooms. At this point, you’ve seen the type of Pokémon every Grunt is carrying.
To progress through the mansion, go through the door left of the stairs. Go right through the room, into the hallway, and into the next door to the right. In the kitchen, check the paper to learn the Team Skull password — Tapu Cocoa — and that they “always butt heads and answers with a hearty “No!”.
Now that we have a password, go ahead up the main stairs to the second floor. In the back-left door of the second floor hallway, you’ll find a TM36 Sludge Bomb in a strangely clean room. In the front-left room, you’ll find another Team Skull password: Bounsweet.
On the second floor door, give the Team Skull Grunt these three passwords: Poison Jab, Bounsweet, and Tapu Cocoa. Then answer with “No!” at the end. You’ll be allowed to enter the balcony and go through the window that leads to Guzma’s room. The big boss of Team Skull is ahead, so this is a good time to return to the Po Town PokeCenter. When you’re ready, approach the door guarded by two Grunts.
- Battle: Team Skull Boss Guzma
- Team: Lvl. 41 Golisopod, Lvl. 41 Masquerain, Lvl. 41 Pinsir
This battle is very similar to the fight against Guzma in Malie Garden. His Pokémon are higher level, and he’ll bring a Pinsir to the fight. Bring Pokémon that can survive powerful Flying and Bug Type attacks. Bring plenty of Hyper Potions and Revives, healing between rounds — if you’re using lots of healing items, it helps to Poison your enemies. Poison, then you can usually wait enemies out, healing and letting them succumb to small amounts of damage each turn.
Defeat Guzma, and he’ll let the captured Yungoos free. Don’t miss the Buginium-Z crystal in the box next to Guzma’s throne. On the way out of the mansion, Nanu will appear and heal you, while Acerola collects the free Pokémon and takes it home. Next goal — return to the Aether House.
When you arrive at Aether House, you’ll learn that Lillie (and Cosmog!) have been kidnapped by Plumeria. Not only that, but Gladion arrives and attacks with his team of Pokémon.
- Battle: Gladion
- Team: Lvl. 42 Golbat, Lvl. 42 Zoroark, Lvl. 42 Type: Null
Gladion’s team looks pretty fearsome, but it isn’t nearly as dangerous as Guzma. Fight every trainer on your path to earn lots of XP, and Gladion shouldn’t be a problem. The real problem is Lillie, and how you’re going to rescue her. We’ll save that for next time.
