A Civilization 7 campaign is split into three Ages, the Antiquity Age, Exploration Age, and Modern Age. As you move into a new Age, the focus of your game also shifts as fresh research trees are unleashed, more buildings are available to construct, and you get more upgrade options. Distant Lands can be discovered in the Exploration Age and we have all the details on what they involve.
The way in which exploration works has received some tweaks going into Civilization 7. Back in Civilization 6, players had to research Sailing to begin constructing ships and giving Builders access to the water. Celestial Navigation and then Shipbuilding allowed you to fully sail the seas. Although this could be done relatively early on in Civilization 6, you’re not able to explore beyond your coastal tiles until the second segment of your Civilization 7 playthrough.

Expand your horizons in Civilization 7
Put simply, Distant Lands are classified as any piece of land that requires you to cross the ocean to reach. This isn’t possible in the Antiquity Age, meaning Distant Lands are only available to access in the Exploration Age. In the Exploration Age, you’ll be able to research Cartography which will allow your units to set sail and explore what lies beyond your initial piece of land. It’s recommended that you also research Shipbuilding, or your units can take damage in rough seas.
Once you’ve found any piece of Distant Land, you can send a Settler to place down a Town. This Town will be considered a Distant Lands Settlement. Whether it’s a small island made up of just a few tiles or a large continent, it’ll still count as a Distant Land.
There are numerous benefits to expanding your empire to Distant Lands in Civilization 7. You will be able to spawn Treasure Fleets which give you the opportunity to earn gold. In addition, expect to come across new resources that are unique to the Distant Lands such as Chocolate and Spices. As you explore the Distant Lands, you’ll discover other civilizations and Independent Powers to make or break relationships with. Trade routes can span across Distant Lands and warmongers can send troops to conquer anyone who may be in the Distant Lands.
Now you know what lies in the Distant Lands, you can broaden the influence of your empire in every game you play.
