Baldur’s Gate 3: How To Save The Mushroom Picker

August 10, 2023 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Shroom and gloom.

The Underdark is a dangerous place in Baldur’s Gate 3 — the fauna itself is out to kill you, and if you want to save the Mushroom Picker and earn a big reward (eventually) you’ll need to carefully navigate the field of green glowing mushrooms. There’s more than just a person in the field. There’s also a valuable treasure that will pay dividends once you reach Act 3. Learn where to find the “Save The Mushroom Picker‘ quest and how to fully complete it for maximum rewards.

How To Save The Mushroom Picker

In the Underdark, you can encounter a quest called ‘Find the Mushroom Picker‘ by approaching a green grove of mushrooms from the Dread Hollow in the west of the Underdark. The area is west of the Myconid Colony. If you enter the Myconid Colony, talk to the vendor Derryth Bonecloak near the entrance to unlock this quest.

  • Find The Mushroom Picker Quest: The Mushroom Picker is located west of the Myconid Colony’s south entrance, near the edge of the Dread Hollow. Climb down the vines to reach a glowing green field. Approach the Bibberbang (explosive mushroom) field and Bonecloak, the dwarf we’re looking for, will yell to you. You’ll automatically enter a conversation. If you’re prepared, you can save him immediately.

If you’re carrying a Scroll of Misty Step while talking to Bonecloak, you can throw it to him. You can purchase one from the Shattered Sanctum vendor Roah Moonglow. Or you can find a Misty Step Scroll in the doctor’s cellar in the Blighted Village.

  • You must pass a Strength [DC:10] check to throw him the scroll.

If you throw a Scroll of Misty Step to him now, you can get to his backpack easier. The backpack has x2 Scrolls of Misty Step and a Scroll of Feather Fall. Use Turn-Based Mode to sprint or jump to the backpack and loot it.

  • If you don’t have a Scroll of Misty Step, you’ll need to help him another way. Find his bag in the mess of poisonous mushrooms. If you get too close, the mushrooms will explode and cause a chain reaction of poisonous acid fumes, killing Bonecloak.
  • Use the high ledge to the left of the field to cross (most) of the Bibberbang, or use Turn-Based Mode to Dash and reach his Backback. Alternatively, summon a Mage Hand. This hand will not trigger the traps.

For saving Bonecloak, ask him for a reward to get a Scroll of Invisibility. Next, return to the Myconid Colony and talk to Derryth. She’ll reveal that she wants Noblestalk Mushrooms — a valuable type of Mushroom.

  • Noblestalk Mushroom: One is located in the Bibberbang Field where Bonecloak the Dwarf is trapped. To reach it, you must travel to the back-right corner and collect it without setting off the trap. The exploding mushrooms will destroy it.
  • Noblestalks fully heal party members that consume it and all status ailments are cured. Worth 75 gold each.

Give Derryth Bonecloak a Noblestalk Mushroom and she’ll reward you back in Baldur’s Gate. You’ll need to reach Act 3 and visit her shop (sharing her surname) to claim your prize.
