Caves don’t have to be so dark. The fourth patch for Sons of the Forest adds a useful new item that makes the darkest corners of the island much easier to see. The Night Vision Goggles are a new light source item you can find relatively easily — if you know the right location. The NVG give you a full field of vision at the cost of batteries. Like the Flashlight, the goggles rely on that limited power source so you’ll want to stock up by raiding plastic bins. The goggles are one of the best ways to give yourself plenty of situational awareness in the many terrifyingly dark caverns filled with cannibals. Learn where to find it below. No monster fighting required.

How To Acquire Night Vision Goggles | Location Guide
Night Vision Goggles (NVG) are the best light source in the game — especially for exploring dark caverns. Powered by batteries, NVG make pitch-black underground caverns light up in green. The image is murky, but you’ll have a relatively clear view of everything, like creatures lurking in the dark.
- Night Vision Goggles Location: Goggles are located in a cave marked on the map above. This cave on a small stream on the southern side of the island.
- Squeeze through the crack to acquire the NVG on a dead body. The body is resting on a chair in the middle of the room. The goggles are on the head of the body.
You’ll also find several crates in the cavern. Smash them open to collect the contents inside — use your axe or any normal weapon. There’s a variety of food items and crafting resources in these crates.
The goggles, like the flashlight, are powered by batteries. The NVGs have a HUD when worn that shows your current power level. Like the flashlight, the light source will go dim and power down when you run out of power. The goggles use up batteries much faster than the flashlight, so only use it when you really need it. Goggles can be togged on / off with [L]. To switch back to the Flashlight or Lighter, you’ll need to equip those first through the inventory or quick-inventory menu.
