The highlands of Hogwarts are home to many magical beasts — and you’ll do more than just battle them in Hogwarts Legacy. After completing the first portion of the main story, you’ll earn the Nab-Sack, a special bag made specifically to rescue magical beasts. Poachers are a scourge in the Forbidden Forest, and the best way to keep creatures safe is to take them to your own personal Vivarium. You’ll be able to capture funny little furballs, strange birds and long-necked weasel-like things, but we all want the impressive critters. One of the coolest magical beasts you can capture is the Hippogriff.
This eagle-horse hybrid is graceful and stately, able to trot on land or take to the skies with otherworldly poise. And you can make friends with one of these beautiful beings. Below, we’ll explain how to unlock creature catching in Hogwarts Legacy, how to store your creatures safely in a private field, and where to find the Hippogriff. Next step? You’ll need to unlock a mount so you can ride it. But that won’t come until later. For now, here’s how to make friends with your first Hippogriff.

Hippogriff Pet | How To Catch Your First Hippogriff
To get your own flying Hippogriff pet, you’ll need to play through the main story until the season changes to fall — this happens after completing the main story quest Rackham’s Test. Completing this quest passes the time, turning the summer season into fall. After this, you’ll unlock several new main story quests and classes. The class you need is the ‘Beast Class’.
- How To Unlock Magical Beast Catching: Complete your first Beast Class to learn about the poachers and the Hippogriff in the Forbidden Forest.
- Complete the class. To progress, you need to complete the main story quest ‘The Helm of Urtkot‘.
- After this quest ‘The Elf, the Nab-Sack and the Loom‘ will unlock. Return to your Room of Requirement and you’ll learn how to use the Nab-Sack.
With the Nab-Sack unlocked, you’ll be able to catch special magical creatures in the environment. At the end of the mission, you’ll unlock a special section of the Room or Research — a Vivarium where your magical beasts will reside. You can only place one of each type of magical beast in the Vivarium.
- How To Catch a Hippogriff: Travel to the Forbidden Forest. At the top of a hill, you’ll find a Hippogriff nest with multiple Hippogriffs. They have five catch pips — use Levioso or other spells like Glacius — and catch one with your Nab-Sack.
Return to the Room of Requirement and release your Hippogriff into the Vivarium. The Hippogriff will explore the grass lands and even fly around on its own. You can groom it with a brush or feed it pellets — if you want to automate the feeding process, you can purchase a feeding trough and place it in the area. By taking care of the Hippogriff, you’ll earn materials you can use on your Magic Loom for gear upgrades.
