If you’re one of the lucky few that picked up the physical special edition for God of War, you’d find a pretty fancy cloth map in your box. This map is covered in runes — and those runes aren’t just for decorations. Nope, they can actually be translated. A group of super-fans already began the translation before the secret on the cloth map was discovered, and after a whole lot of work, a message with instructions was revealed.
Long story short, this is one complicated Easter egg. The cloth map (with all those runes) translates into a treasure map, with exact instructions Kratos needs to follow to unlock a legendary treasure. The treasure itself is pretty dang cool — a Legendary Level 8 Leviathan Axe Pommel called the Forbidden Grip of Ages. It increases all of Kratos’ stats, and adds an explosive blastwave when he completes his standard light attack combo.
Below, we’re going to explain how to make the Legendary Axe Pommel treasure chest appear. It’s unlike anything else in the game, so be prepared for a little trial and error.

How To Unlock A Super Secret “Forbidden” Treasure
According to the map, as translated, you’ll need to stand on a golden circle and look to specific landmarks very quickly. The gold circle on the physical cloth map appears on Muspelheim Tower, so that’s where Kratos needs to stand. Here’s exactly what to do.
- Stand on Muspelheim Tower, south of Tyr’s Temple.
- Look straight ahead at Tyr’s Temple.
- Look to the left brazier on the Muspelheim Tower deck.
- Look back at Tyr’s Temple.
- Look to the right brazier on the Muspelheim Tower deck.
- Look to the left brazier on the Muspelheim Tower deck.
- Look back at Tyr’s Temple.
- Look down at the floor of the Muspelheim Tower deck.
- Look to the right brazier on the Muspelheim Tower deck.
- Look to the left brazier on the Muspelheim Tower deck.
- Look straight ahead at Tyr’s Temple to reveal the chest.
Just A Few More Tips
That’s a whole lot of steps, and you have to complete them very quickly. You can’t pause when looking. It’s best to memorize the order before attempting it — think of it like inputting a cheat code.
For best results, stand between the two braziers (where the fires are burning) while facing Tyr’s Temple. The order of movements is basically — up, left, up, right, left, up, down, right, left, up.
If you complete the inputs fast enough and correctly, the realm tear will appear. There are no other chests or secrets like this in God of War (that we know of) and this is one of the best weapon upgrades you can find, so it’s totally worth it.
