Sons of the Forest: How To Revive Kelvin & Virginia | NPC Companions Guide

April 10, 2023 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Bring your favorite companions back from the dead.

You’re running around the cannibal-infested forests when the worst comes to pass — your loyal companion Kelvin is dead. In Sons of the Forest your NPC companions are far from invincible. While they’re meant to survive, they can be killed or lost. You’ll start with Kelvin, a companion that takes orders and can help you build your log cabin outpost or hunt for food. Another ally comes later. Virginia is a resident of the island that initially appears frightening, but she’s actually here to help. You can’t give her orders, but you can give her items. She’s another useful NPC that can unfortunately get taken out if you’re not careful.

Early on, the only option for players looking to revive Kelvin or Virginia was pretty drastic. You’d be stuck editing game files or using third-party cheat programs. Don’t risk corrupting your save files. There’s another way to bring back these NPCs. You can use official in-game cheats in Singleplayer or Multiplayer sessions. It’s incredibly simple and can be done at any time. You won’t disrupt Steam Achievements either. Here’s how it works.

How To Revive Kelvin & Virginia

There are two NPC companions in Sons of the Forest; your starting companion Kelvin, and Virginia the three-legged creature you can build friendship with. If one or both of them dies, they’ll be gone from your save file permanently. Unless you’re willing to use a workaround. You can use a cheat code to bring them back. This resets Virginia to her starting friendship level, so you’ll need to build up a relationship from scratch if she dies.

Before you can resummon NPC allies, you’ll need to unlock the Admin Panel. This is built-in cheat function and is incredibly easy to use. Here’s a quick rundown.

  • How To Unlock Cheats: Load your save file and enter in-game. At any time, type the following command.
    • Type [cheatstick] without the brackets. No message will appear.
    • Press [F1] to open the Admin Panel. If you typed in the previous command correctly, a panel will open up.

After opening the Admin Panel, you’ll see a huge list of commands. Typing in a command and pressing Enter to initiate a cheat code. There are many, many useful codes available on the Admin Panel, but we’re looking for two specific codes.

  • Reviving Kelvin & Virginia: After unlocking the Admin Panel, input the following codes to spawn a new Kelvin or Virginia. This can summon multiple of both NPCs if you really want more.
    • addcharacter robby
    • addcharacter virginia

Robby is Kelvin. Technically, using this cheat can add a second / third / etc Kelvin. You can do the same for Virginia. Each Virginia is reset to 0 Relationship stat so you’ll need to work toward making her a true companion again. You can ignore the Admin Panel after this. Doing this does NOT DISABLE Steam Achievements so there’s no downside (currently) for activating cheats and summoning replacement allies.
