Mortal Kombat 11: The Best Easter Eggs, References & Callbacks [VIDEO]

May 9, 2019 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Mortal Kombat 11 is full of references to its long (and extremely silly) history. Here are the best of the bunch, with our favorite fatalities, character intros, and hidden background secrets.

Mortal Kombat 11 is packed with Easter eggs — maybe too many. There are so many ridiculous references, deep-cut callbacks and secrets hidden in the latest iteration of this famously violent fighting series that there was no way we could find them all. Instead of trying to tally everything, we’ve taken a different tactic; here’s all the best stuff.

And there are some pretty amazing references. Whether it’s the dumb lizard from the Mortal Kombat movie, executed old characters like Hsu Hao, or just incredibly awful returning fatalities — the game is deeply referential. If you’re not a fan of the series, you might be a little lost.

Even the loading screen has Easter eggs. You’ll see repeated lines from previous games, telling you to look to ‘la luna’, or scrambled messages. Those are references to secret bosses from the older games, going back to the original MK — don’t worry, it’s all explained in the video above. The series is so filled with impenetrable lore, much of the main story is built on Easter egg characters like Noob Saibot… which is just Tobias Boon spelled backwards. That’s the last names of the two primary creators of the franchise, for reference.

The Krypt, the place where you’ll spend all that weird in-game currency, is also insanely dense with Easter eggs. In the distance of the Bridge, you can see Blaze battling Hornbuckle — characters that first appeared in the far background of Mortal Kombat 2.

As far as fatalities go, the worst of the recreated bunch has to be Kabal’s awful old fatality. Returning as a joke brutality in MK11, Kabal can grab an enemy combatant and show off his ‘scary’ face, causing the victim’s ghost to flee in terror. It’s hilarious bad, and there are multiple secret old fatalities you can pull off — but only after using the ‘Mercy’ feature. Yeah, it gets pretty complicated.

There’s a lot more than that to explore, so check out the full video above. There’s nothing better than a bunch of MK goofiness.
