Red Dead Redemption 2 is a truly massive open-world game, and the world is made alive with unique events called ‘Chance Encounters’. These special scenarios play out all the time, and randomly appear as you explore this digital version of the old west. Most of the time, you’ll encounter hombres that want to do you harm, or friendly faces looking for a chat. Rarely, you’ll be able to get a fancy reward for the deal.
Here, we’re talking about one of the best chance encounters, and it’s honestly pretty hard to miss. If you find (and help) someone in need, you can earn an expensive reward for yourself. A stranger will actually buy something for you — and it can be something expensive, too. You’ll want to find this hospitable stranger as early as possible to save yourself a stack of dollars on your burgeoning arsenal. Here’s how the encounter works.

How To Get A Stranger To Buy You A Gun | Chance Encounters Guide
After completing Chapter 1 and entering Chapter 2, you’ll be able to encounter a man that’s either stepped into a bear trap, or bit by a snake. You’ll need to carry a Health Cure (any type will work) when you encounter the poisoned fellow — if you help him, you’ll get a valuable reward.
- A snake-bitten man will wail for help outside of Valentine, near the river south of Caliban’s Seat. A variation of this event spawns in many, many places — just ride around, and you’ll hear wailing.
After at least 48 hours have passed, the man will return in any town. Most likely, he’ll appear in Valentine — waiting outside a gunshop. He’ll say “Howdy” to Arthur when you step close to the store, and offer to buy you a free gun. Whatever weapon you purchase is completely on-the-house. The price for all weapons with be blanked out, showing that your next purchase is on someone else.
You only get one free item, so choose wisely. I recommend grabbing a Rifle, Repeater, or Shotgun. All of these weapons are pretty expensive, so choose the most expensive one for the most bang.
Most Chance Encounters give you a couple bucks, or just a trip to your last checkpoint. This particular encounter gets you a free weapon — but only if you help the man. If you’re a dirty bandit and decide to steal and shoot this unfortunate fellow, you’re missing out on a much better prize.
