To craft Legendary loot in Diablo 4 all you’ll need is a little gold and a visit to the Occultist. Crafting isn’t really a thing in Diablo 4 — you can upgrade gear you’ve already found, enhance the affixes with random rolls or even add new gem slots. But when it comes to making gear Legendary, we’re going to call it crafting. By taking Legendary Aspects off one piece of gear and putting it on another, you can turn that gear into a Legendary tier item.
Below, we’ll explain in-depth how to take a Rare item and make it Legendary using the Occultist. Depending on how far you want to go, this process can be surprisingly simple or intensely complex. And you can even save a lot of money. Check out the full guide to learn everything you need to start making your own custom Legendary loot.

How To Upgrade Rare Gear Into Legendary
To upgrade the rarity tier of gear, you’ll need to use the powerful Occultist. The Occultist vendor is only found in large settlements. With the Occultist, you can dismantle Legendary Gear to acquire powerful Aspects, Imprint Aspects or reroll Affixes to improve your gear.
By using the Imprint Aspect tab at any Occultist, we’ll be able to increase the rarity of the gear permanently.
- How To Increase Rarity: Go to any Occultist.
- On the Imprint Aspect tab, select a Rare (Yellow) piece of gear.
- Select a Codex of Power or Aspect.
- With both selected, you’ll get a preview of the new Legendary gear.
Upgrading gear from Rare to Legendary costs gold and Veiled Crystals. These are a rare drop in the wild but can always be earned through a different vendor in town.
- How To Earn Veiled Crystals: Veiled Crystals are guaranteed to drop when salvaging Rare gear at the Blacksmith.
With Veiled Crystals, and a small gold charge (only about 7,000~ gold at Level 50~) you can greatly enhance a piece of gear. This also allows you to transfer Aspects from one piece of gear to another.
What Are Codex of Power & Aspects?
Codex of Power and Aspects are two names for the same type of upgrade — a powerful buff on gear that gives you a powerful buff. These can upgrade abilities, give you defensive upgrades, or just flatly increase stats. Every Legendary piece of equipment has an Aspect. All gear can only have one Aspect imprinted at a time.
If you don’t understand Codex of Power or Aspects, here’s a quick rundown. Both are Aspects, but they are used differently.
- Codex of Power: An Aspect that you’ve unlocked permanently. These Aspects are unlocked by completing Dungeons on the world map. Any Codex of Power Aspect unlocked can be used as many times as you want.
- Aspect: A Legendary Aspect is a one-time-only consumable that appears in your inventory under the Aspects tab. These can only be acquired by using the Occultist Extract Aspect tab. By destroying Legendary gear you’ll acquire the Aspect, which can be reused only one time.
By extracting Aspects then imprinted, we can take powerful Aspects you’ll want to keep and place them on much better gear.
Enchanting Items At The Occultist
To truly unlock the potential of your gear, you’ll want to use the Enchant Item tab. By preparing before imprinting, we can save hundreds of thousands of gold by using a trick. Before getting into the trick, here’s how Enchanting works.
- Occultist Enchanting: Rare and Legendary gear can be enchanted at any Occultist.
- By selecting an item, you will get a list of affixes on that item. Affixes are stat boosts.
- Select an affix to reroll it. This will give you a better (or worse) replacement.
Each enchantment costs gold, and the price goes up after every enchantment. The more you reroll affixes, the more expensive each roll will be.
- How To Save Gold When Enchanting: Before Imprinting a Rare piece of gear, enchant it first. The only difference between Rare and Legendary gear is the Aspect.
- Reroll with Rare gear first to save hundreds of thousands of gold. Once you get good enough affixes, then you can Imprint an aspect onto the item, turning it into a Legendary.
That’s all it takes to save gold. Using this method, you can create a God-Tier perfect piece of gear. I don’t recommend worrying about upgrading gear until you reach World Tier 4. At that point, you’ll need to upgrade gear to keep up with the challenge enemies present.
