There’s more than one way to evolve Eevee in Pokemon GO — thanks to the Generation 2 update, there are now five alternate Eevee evolutions to choose from. But today we’re focusing on just two; Espeon and Umbreon, the psychic and dark type additions from Pokemon Gold / Silver.
Most fans are probably familiar with the Eevee nickname Easter egg, allowing you to pick which type of evolution you want using some Pokemon anime references. Being the clever people that they are, the Pokemon GO Silph Road reddit discovered how to turn Eevee into Umbreon / Espeon using a similar method.
After enough experimentation, the secret has been unlocked, and we now have a method for evolving Espeon / Umbreon. Once again, we have the fine folks at the Pokemon GO reddit to thank for all their hard work and testing.

How to Get Espeon & Umbreon [Secondary Method]
There’s a big problem with that Eevee Easter egg — it only works once! If you want multiple Espeon or Umbreon, you’ll need to evolve them the “legit” way. Here’s how it works.
- How to Get Espeon
- Make Eevee your Buddy and walk 10km — get at least 2 Candies.
- Evolve at Night
- How to Get Umbreon
- Make Eevee your Buddy and walk 10km — get at least 2 Candies.
- Evolve during the Day
Many Pokemon GO players are reporting that this method works. If you’re eager to get an extra Espeon or Umbreon, this is how you can do it without relying on random chance.
All Eeveelutions – Nickname Method
Nickname your Eevee one of the corresponding nicknames before evolving to always earn that particular evolution. This trick will only work once per nickname.
- Nickname: Sparky
- Evolves into: Jolteon
- Nickname: Rainer
- Evolves into: Vaporeon
- Nickname: Pyro
- Evolves into: Flareon
- Nickname: Sakura
- Evolves into: Espeon
- Nickname: Tamao
- Evolves into: Umbreon
