Lords of the Fallen: How To Beat The Mendacious Visage | Boss Guide

October 24, 2023 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Find and destroy this optional boss early in Lords of the Fallen.

One of the first areas of Lords of the Fallen is the Forsaken Fen, and it’s worth checking out completely. The Forsaken Fen is a dreary, poisonous bog that’ll aggravate you like some of the cruelest locations in the Dark Souls series. And like any of these games, there are optional bosses you can fight by exploring the unseen corners of each area. One shortcut route is protected by a powerful Umbral enemy called the Mendacious Visage. This challenging creature can only be fought in the Umbral — and it patrols a unique boss arena with extra enemies you’ll need to take out. Learn how to handle the Mendacious Visage optional boss and clear another path through the upper levels of the Forsaken Fen.

The Mendacious Visage Boss

Follow the Iron Wayfarer path to find the Mendacious Visage.

Where To Find: On an optional path in the Forsaken Fen. From the Vestige, travel into the stick village. Past the first village area, you’ll reach a canyon that is swarming with poison frogs. Instead of going that direction, go right into the waist-high water. Enter the Umbral to spot the Iron Wayfarer NPC.

  • Follow this path up and through rolling mud boulders with frogs inside. Past that, you’ll find a shortcut ladder you can kick down. Past the ladder, you’ll need to enter the Umbral to get through a barrier. The barrier leads into the boss arena.

Because of the way you enter the arena, you’ll only be able to enter this arena in the Umbral. If you die, you die. That makes this fight a little trickier than normal.

The Mendacious Visage opens up.

Fighting The Boss: The Mendacious Visage is a slow-moving stone statue head. It generates Umbral energy, launching Umbral energy when it opens up the mask. Mostly, it attacks by stamping the ground, generating a huge Umbral blast. Dodgeroll back to avoid the energy shot.

  • Enemies will also take potshots at you in the arena. Find the two Umbral anchors on the right and left to clear a path to the upper level of arena. Defeat the enemies that snipe you with Umbral magic to make this fight much easier.

The boss is only vulnerable when you attack its back or when it has the mask open. Because the open mask generates Umbral magic missiles, you’re still better off attacking it from behind.

When it slams the ground, it will generate a wave of Umbral projectiles. Dodge through them and attack from behind. You can also dodge forward and attack the exposed core. You can safely attack the core when you don’t see any glowing Umbral projectiles inside.

  • After it opens its mask, wait for it to launch a projectile then attack. When it charges and unleashes a swarm of Umbral leeches that crawl and explode when you step on them, this is a good time to attack. Lay into the weak spot until it recovers. You’re safe while it is launching leeches —

Be very careful how you move when the Umbral leeches are spread around the arena like mines. Step on multiple leeches and you rapidly drain your health. Dodgeroll through the leeches to make them explode or walk close until they detonate on their own.

Be mindful of your positioning and how the boss attacks. If you take it slow, focusing on his back and only attacking when you have a safe opening, this boss will go down. It also helps to improve Wither resistance or equip weapons that are buffed with Fire or Holy damage. The more damage you can do when it is vulnerable, the easier this boss will be.
