No Man’s Sky BEYOND: How To Power Your Base & Keep It Running Smoothly | Power Tips & Tricks

August 19, 2019 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Keep the juice flowing in No Man’s Sky — here’s everything you need to know about the new power mechanics.

There are two primary resources you’ll need to familiarize yourself with to power your base in No Man’s Sky — generators and wires. Generators generate power, and then you connect wires to your devices / rooms to power them. Wires are totally free, so you can run wires around walls, through the ground, or through walls to keep your base tidy.

Here, I’m going to explain everything you need to know about power; which generators you want, how to power rooms, and what needs power (and when!). Everything you need to make an efficient base with plenty of juice flowing.

There are tricks to powering your rooms, and not everything needs to be hooked up all at once. If you aren’t generating enough power, your base will go dark and your devices will shut down. It’s also important to know that most of your base functions do not need power while you’re away.

How To Power Your Base & Keep It Running Smoothly | Power Tips & Tricks

Powering your base can get complicated, so let’s start with the most important part — the generators! There are three important generators you’ll want to build, and each one is better than the last.

  • Biogenerator: The starting generator. Runs on biofuels. Replace this ASAP and use only as a back-up.
  • Solar Panel: Self-sustaining generators. They produce 50 power in bright spots, and 25 power in dim spots. Make sure to place them on the roof of your base so they can soak up lots of sun!
  • Electromagnetic: The best of the three generators on our list. Building one of these babies is high priority. With the right placement, you can generator an insane amount of power — about 5,000 power.

Start with the biogenerator, then upgrade to Solar Panels. With these, your base might go offline at night, so keep the biogenerator as a back-up while you’re working to get the blueprint for the electromagnetic generator. Once you have the EM Generator, your power needs are finished.

You’ll also want to build a battery once you have Solar Panels. The Solar Panels will generate enough power during the day to charge the battery, and the battery will provide enough power to keep your base running at night.

Keeping Your Base Powered With Wires

Wires transport power from your generators to your base. There are a lot of little details about wires you should know. They’re incredibly handy, and they’re a limitless resource.

  • Wires are totally free. Build as many as you want!
  • Create a complete circuit. Wire up all your generators to each other, and to the battery.
  • Pre-Fab rooms will power everything inside them. You just have to provide power to the room with a wire. Other rooms require you to power each device with a wire.
  • Wires can be placed through walls — create an outlet. Place a wire through a wall, then use that ‘outlet’ to power everything else in your room.

To keep your base running efficiently, you’ll also want to build some more advanced options. If you have farms, you’ll need to keep the base powered, even when you’re away so your crops will continue to grow.

Other items like the Portal only need power when you’re leaving. You can always travel TO your portal, but you can’t travel FROM your portal unless it is powered. Wire it up, and place a pressure plate circuit under the portal so it turns on when you’re leaving. Then it won’t waste your power all day.

To save even more power at your main base, build a Proximity Sensor. Power will turn on when you’re in your base, then switch off when you’re away. Very, very handy.

Farms need power too. If you want to keep your farms running, I recommend building bio-domes outside your base and connecting them to a completely separate set of generators. Farms need to run constantly, so solar panels / batteries are a good investment.
