Fortnite Tips

Fortnite is Epic Games’ brand new co-op sandbox survival game where Minecraft meets Dungeon Defenders. Even though Fortnite is only currently in Early Access there’s a lot to digest so we put together a Fortnite Tips and Tricks for Beginners guide.

Pay Attention To The Tutorial

Nobody really likes to do tutorials and Fortnite’s somewhat long and boring tutorial is no exception to that but you should still pay attention to what it teaches you. Going into a battle and forgetting how to make a door or a low wall because you slept through the tutorial will make the game frustrating for you and your teammates.

Fortnite Tips
The Tutorial is filled with a few mundane tasks like this one but it lays the groundwork for the entire game.

Unlock Everything Early

We just told you to pay attention to the tutorial and now we’re telling you to get it over with to unlock everything as quickly as possible? Fornite has a lot of systems, sub-systems, and currencies (too many of them if you ask us) and the quicker you can unlock them to start earning research points and completing quests the better.

Use Early Missions to Find Out What You Like

The first half dozen missions are easy… really, really easy. Save your traps, build as few things as possible and figure out what hero and weapons you prefer. Your defenses likely won’t even take a single point of damage in the first few missions so there’s no reason to build elaborate castles and mazes. Instead use these missions to find out what hero you prefer. Fortnite can become a bit of a grindfest later on and the sooner you can figure out what hero you want to invest XP into the better.

Smash and Loot Everything

Everything you loot is persistent from game to game so there’s no reason not to pickaxe and loot as much as possible so that you are never short on resources. When you are in residential areas you can smash through floors and ceilings to discover hidden areas with chests. Look for mines towards the edges of maps which are the most abundant source of crafting resources and chests.

Fortnite Tips
Smashing through a floor to find a hidden chest makes exploring in Fortnite a satisfying journey.

Don’t Hoard Resources

If you are smashing everything in sight with your pickaxe like we said above then you will generally have no shortage of resources. Backpack space is also incredibly limited in Fortnite so you will quickly reach a point where you have no choice but to convert crafting materials into weapons, ammo, or other items.

After unlocking a few schematics that you enjoy you should start crafting those while recycling any low quality weapons you find. Another tip is that you can recycle a weapon with next to no durability so use a weapon for as long as possible before recycling it.

Don’t Bother With Base Defenders

In their current iteration base defenders are not only not good they’re an actual detriment to you. Base defenders are AI controlled friends that you can assign to help you protect your storm shield. Not only do you need to equip them with their own weapons you also have to give each and every defender their own reserves of ammo. That may not seem like a big deal but ammo is arguably the most precious resource in the game and one base defender can easily go through 1,000 rounds in a single mission. Just play without them — or better yet with a group of real life human beings.

Take Your Time In Missions

Unless your house is currently on fire there’s no reason to rush through a mission as quickly as possible. Discover as much of the map as possible, explore buildings and look for hidden chests, mine as many rare resources as you can. Doing this will naturally put you closer to completing objectives which will reward your team with better loot at the end of the mission. All of this adds up over time and will save you more time in the long run than instantly triggering the combat portion of a mission.

Fortnite Tips
Take your time and complete as many objectives as possible and your loot chest will look even better than this one.
