Become a dirty thief and unlock your way to great gear (or riches) in Starfield with Digipicks. Digipicks are the new unified system for both hacking and unlocking — you can crack open computers, safes and locked doors all with Digipick puzzles. There’s a lot to learn in this system, so we’re going to cover everything you need to know about becoming a master burglar.
Using Digipicks is often considered a crime in large settlements, so you’ll want to obtain Stealth skills to make the most out of this skill. You’ll usually find locked doors and safes in enemy outposts — and without unlocking Security, you’ll be limited to only cracking Novice locks. The higher your skill, the more locks you’ll be able to open while exploring the vast, vast galaxy of Starfield.

How To Lockpick Doors & Safes | Digipick Guide
Digipicks are the new lockpicks of Starfield. These handy tools are used to crack open door, safes and even computer terminals. Instead of turning a dial and hoping to find the right space before your lockpick breaks like in Skyrim or Fallout 4, you’ll instead need to solve a (relatively simple) puzzle.
- Lock Puzzles: Lock puzzles consist of 2, 3, 4 or 5 rings with missing pieces. You’ll have a series of ‘keys’ that you can use to unlock all the current rings. To solve each puzzle, carefully use the keys. Use only the keys you need for each level. If you spend the wrong keys early, you won’t be able to solve the later rings.
- Digipicks are used when attempting to unlock. You’ll need to use another digipick to reset the puzzle, or when exiting the puzzle and trying again. You can try as many times as you want as long as you have digipicks to spend.
There are four levels of Digipick difficulty — Novice, Advanced, Expert and Master. You can only open higher level locks if you’ve unlocked higher levels of the Security Skill. This skill is tied with Digipick usage.
- Security Skill: Skill required to unlock more advanced digipick locks. Anyone can open Novice Locks. These do NOT require unlocking the first rank of Security. All other difficulty lock levels require Security.
- Rank 1: You can attempt to hack Advanced locks, and 2 auto attempts can be banked.
- Rank 2: You can attempt to hack Expert locks, and 3 auto attempts can be banked. Rings now turn blue when the pick can be slotted.
- Rank 3: You can now attempt to hack Master-level locks, and 4 auto attempts can be banked.
- Rank 4: Expend a digipick to eliminate keys that aren’t required to solve the puzzle. 5 auto attempts can be banked.
By solving lock puzzles successfully, you’ll fill a small meter which gives you access to ‘auto attempts’ — these a random chances to solve the puzzle without having to solve it yourself. By solving puzzles, you can unlock multiple free attempts. When used, you’ll need to earn more meter by solving puzzles yourself.
To increase your rank, you must solve 10, 15 and so on locks. Locks are often found when prowling around areas and allow you to access storage rooms, safes and other valuables. If a container or lock has a red mark, that means it is illegal to be seen unlocking. You’re allowed to open a lock, but if you solve it while being seen, you’ll be charged with a crime or bounty. Security will appear instantly to pay a fine and take away any stolen items you may be carrying.
Stealth and Security go well together. If you’re planning on becoming a master thief, you’ll want to add Stealth to your repertoire — and Theft is often useful too.
