Sons of the Forest: How To Cut Down Trees Faster | Modern Axe Location Guide

April 10, 2023 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Trading up for a permanent improvement. Here’s how to properly outfit your modern lumberjack.

You’ll be doing a lot of log cutting in Sons of the Forest. Logs are required to build almost everything in your camp — cabins, walls, floors for treehouses, and defensive gates to protect you from the creatures lurking outside. Cutting down logs is an essential task, and there’s a way to cut down trees faster. Your starting survival axe is pretty good when it comes to felling trees, but you can get something better right at the start of the game. The Modern Axe isn’t just more powerful against enemies, it’s also straight-up better at cutting down trees.

There’s another way to boost your log collecting. You can ask your NPC companion Kelvin to cut down trees and bring the logs to your worksite. This is honestly one of the best ways to collect logs without cutting down trees yourself — but you’ll still want the Modern Axe. If you’re working with Kelvin, you can exponentially increase the number of logs you’re both collecting. Unfortunately, Kelvin can only carry one log at a time. He’s pretty slow. You can carry two once your strength meter increases a little bit.

Modern Axe Location Guide

The Modern Axe is an improved Axe you can acquire right at the start of the game. It is located at a small military camp — you can travel there on Day 1 and retrieve the Axe. Like all other gear, it does not degrade from use so this is a permanent upgrade.

  • Moden Axe Location: Go to the map location shown above. The Modern Axe is in a small military camp. The axe is embedded in the chest of one of the soldiers at a tent. The camp has a distinctive pond with a dead body floating inside.

The Modern Axe is a powerful upgrade over your Tactical Axe. It does more damage to enemy, has greater range, and cuts down trees faster. The camp site is located near the B-Team member that’s hanging from the rock ledge — the one you have to cut the rope to acquire the Flashlight. There’s a lake nearby — follow the path from the lake to reach this easy-to-miss location.

The Modern Axe is the best version of the axe. You can also find a standard Fire Axe inside the underground chambers of the island — but you can ignore that now. The Modern Axe is the top of the line.
