There are a lot of collectibles hidden in The Last of Us Part 1. All of them are optional, but they do tend to provide a lot more detail and background on the world that the game is set in. The artifacts, in particular, add a lot of texture to the story as many of them are things like handwritten notes that tell small stories of the people and places that you’ll see on your journey.
Finding the game’s artifacts is completely optional and not required in any way to complete the main story of the game, however, if you’re looking to get the platinum trophy for The Last of Us Part 1, you’ll need to find them all as the “Chronicle” trophy requires the player to find all artifacts and notes. When near them, you’ll see a button prompt paired with a small image of the item that’s in front of you. For example, if it’s a note, the image will be of a piece of paper.

Beyond the Wall
#1 and #2: As soon as you get access to your backpack and gun, the first two artifacts are actually hidden inside your inventory. Open your backpack and you’ll find two notes already inside titled “Military Pamphlet” and “Boston Q.Z. Map.” Select each to take them out and view them.
#3: After fighting through your first encounter with the infected, find the flight of stairs leading to the second story. You’ll be prompted to continue forward over a large wooden board that covers a massive hole in the floor. Instead of continuing straight, take a left and go through the first door on the left. It’ll be closed, but you can open it with the triangle button. Inside the room, you’ll find some cubicles and in the far corner a note next to a health pickup.
The Slums
#1: As you progress through the level, you’ll end up walking through a bus. Instead of following Tess to the right after getting through the bus, head to the corkboard to the left of the grey tent. Here, you’ll find a wanted poster for Marlene that you can look at and collect.
#2: Once you’ve found Marlene’s wanted poster, do a 180-degree turn. Directly in front of you on the ground, you’ll find a civilian notice that’s got some profanity on it to read.
#4: After fighting your way through the docks, you’ll be led to enter a large warehouse that’s next to a big crane and has a boat floating to its right. Just outside the warehouse, across from the boat, you’ll find a handwritten note.
#5: Head inside the warehouse towards the right side of the boat that’s suspended in the center of the room. There, you’ll see two blue rolling containers and, tucked away behind them, is another note.
