Destiny 2: Crown of Sorrow Raid Guide | How To Beat Every Encounter

June 6, 2019 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Face the truly terrifying Crown of Sorrow raid with confidence — here’s how to complete every step of the new ‘Season of Opulence’ raid in Destiny 2.

Encounter #3: Kingdom of Sorrow – Gahlran’s Deception

  • GOAL: Defeat the Boss

Welcome to the final arena. Before you can face the last boss, you’ll have to deal with the penultimate encounter. Like the first encounter, some enemies can only be killed by players with the ‘Witch’s Blessing‘ buff, and some can only be killed by players without this buff.

To begin the encounter, melee attack the elite enemy with a shield and two axes. Before doing this, make sure you’re prepared — split the team. One of these enemies will appear in each of the three corners.

How The Arena Works: When the encounter begins, shield walls will appear that splits the arena into three sections. There’s no way to cross these sections. You’ll need to split the group into three groups of two.

Randomly, the ‘Witch’s Blessing‘ buff will spawn in one of these three sections.

How To Avoid The Boss: The main boss himself, the axe-wielding guy, is incredibly powerful. To avoid getting one-hit killed, stand on the crates or raised areas of the arena. He won’t be able to reach you.

Focus on killing adds — additional enemies. Kill them fast, or you’ll fail. Your primary goal is to summon the Ogres by killing Wizards in this phase.

How To Reach Stage 2: Kill the two Wizards in your section, and Ogre will spawn. Kill the Ogres in all three sections to reach the next step.

For Phase 2, you need to transfer the ‘Witch’s Blessing‘ buff to your teammates. Doing this is slightly complicated. Normally, your teammates won’t be able to access the buff. You need to transfer it through the center of the arena so they can break impenetrable shields.

How To Transfer ‘Witch’s Blessing’ To Another Section: After killing the Ogres, the purple orb in the center of shield wall will activate. To transfer the buff, step into the circle around the purple orb and shoot it.

The orb can be accessed by players from two sections — the original buffed player needs to stand in the circle, and the two opposite section players need to stand in the circle. Shoot the purple orb to transfer the buff from one player to two.

This will also bring down the wall. Two players on one side will be buffed, and two players on the other side will be un-buffed. One player from each pair will need to swap sides — you don’t want two un-buffed or two buffed players together; always one buffed, one un-buffed.

Rinse and repeat. Follow these steps:

  1. Split into three groups of two. The arena will split into 3 sections.
  2. One section will have the ‘Witch’s Blessing’ buff.
  3. Kill enemies, destroy the two Wizards, and kill the Ogres from all three sections.
  4. A purple orb will activate. Transfer the buff from one team to the next.
  5. Repeat.

Do this for all three sections. At the second transfer, all six players can gather around the orb at the same time — you want to make sure four players in the team gain the buff. Once this is done, you’ll be able to damage the boss.

Phase 3: When all three shield walls are down, you’ll be able to fight the boss properly. You need four players with ‘Witch’s Blessing‘ buff, and two players without for the most efficient damage output.

How To Break The Boss’ Shield: One buffed and one non-buffed player must melee attack the boss’ shield. Only players without the buff can damage the boss. You don’t need to melee the shield at the same time.

There’s another complication. The shields will go back up around the boss quickly. Each time you shatter his shields with a melee attack, the player with a buff will lose that buff.

NOTE: Make sure players with the ‘Witch’s Blessing’ buff are FAR AWAY from the boss when his shield is down. Otherwise, you can lose all your buffs in a single blast.

If you have four buffed players, you can break his shield four times during this phase. That’s a lot of extra time to do damage. After your buffs are drained, the encounter resets and you’ll have to run through the entire thing again.

Complete all the steps, reach Phase 3, use melee attacks to break the shield and shoot him until he’s down.
