Anthem, for all it’s release troubles, development troubles, and current troubles — at least it does one thing right. If you’re one of the very few that managed to unlock every achievement / trophy in the game, there’s a very weird little secret waiting for you.
Before delving into the bonus feature, let’s talk a little bit about Anthem. It’s a ‘live service game’ like Destiny 2, set on a mysterious planet called Bastion. You play as a Freelancer, an agent that completes missions while wearing a special suit called a Javelin. These mech suits allow Freelancers to explore the vast locations while flying — and unlock powerful abilities to wipe out swarms of smaller enemies.
Naturally, you can play the game alone, or with a small group of friends. Here’s where that special bonus feature comes into play. When you earn 100% achievements / trophies, you’ll actually unlock the ability to summon three AI NPCs. Now that’s surprising.
The squad of AI companions come in three flavors: Arcanists, Freelancers, and Sentinels. They’re just different skins on the same soldiers, but it’s still a surprising addition to a game. These AI companions can’t fly, so they’ll only help you when you’re on the ground.
This is a completely bizarre feature. Why is it so well-hidden in the game? Even players that have surpassed the highest end-game levels might never see this feature. The worst part isn’t even the RNG — it’s trying to find all the collectibles. Players suggest starting up three separate pilots and collecting the same collectibles on the map three times — apparently, collectibles are shared between your characters.
That might make one step of the achievement / trophy hunt easier.
