Recently, growing reports and evidence shows Anthem is bricking consoles by causing them to randomly crash or completely shut down. This led to Sony issuing refunds to those who purchased Anthem from their digital store. However, this is not the problem, the game’s subreddit had a thread with a list of things the studio promised, and even showcased, prior to the game’s release that are simply absent from the final game.
Luckily, BioWare’s Lead Producer Ben Irving was there to respond and comment on the issue. He said that “the cost of transparency is things change,” and as development progresses, features and content either get added in or taken out. He continued to elaborate more on the game development’s process as a whole, explaining how things change and evolve over time.
The short answer is that the cost of transparency is things change. We did our best to be transparent on the journey to going live but with that we knew things would be different in some situations. Sometimes people would be happy and sometimes they would be upset.

Edit: to elaborate – game development is full of change. There are a million reasons why you set out with an idea and it evolves over time. This is common in every game. We shared as much as we could. Some things change. So the cost of transparency is that some things we said become not true, not because someone was dishonest but because it changed over the course of development.
Anthem released on February 22nd, 2019 for PS4, Xbox One and PC. Prior to release, we discussed Anthem’s director and lead producer’s mention of how free-to-play model was considered at first for Anthem’s development.
