In Mortal Kombat 1, there are many systems and mechanics that go beyond just learning combo strings and performing Fatalities. Whether it be Mortal Kombat or any other fighting game, you won’t be able to get to that next level without a strong defense. Since knowing how to avoid damage is just as important, if not more important than dealing damage, Mortal Kombat 1 has a deep and robust number of systems that purely revolve around defense and getting out of trouble. One of the most important defensive tools is the Combo Breaker which will allow you to get out of your opponent’s attacks. This is a mechanic that players will need to know how to use if they want to limit the amount of damage that they take during a fight. This guide will provide an explanation of how to do a Combo Breaker and what it is used for in Mortal Kombat 1.

How To Do A Combo Breaker In Mortal Kombat 1
The Combo Breaker makes its return in Mortal Kombat 1 after being replaced by the Breakaway system introduced in the previous title, Mortal Kombat 11. While the systems were similar, there were distinct differences that changed how they got you out of your opponent’s combo. While retaining the name and being almost identical to the old Combo Breaker, there are a few changes that players will need to be aware of to ensure they know how and when to use it.
Just like the previous version of the Combo Breaker, players will need to spend EX Meter to perform the move. This meter is found at the bottom of the screen with your meter being on the side of the screen that your character’s health bar is on. The meter is broken up into 3 bars which each can be used to enhance specific moves with some moves costing 1 bar and others costing 2. Before the Fatal Blow system was introduced and the Super Moves were tied to the bar instead of remaining health, Combo Breakers would cost 2 bars since the X-Ray moves of previous titles would be the full 3. In Mortal Kombat 1, however, the Combo Breaker cost all 3 bars of Meter to perform. This makes the Breaker an extremely expensive resource that you will need to make sure you are willing to use.
If you have the Meter and are willing to spend it to get out of a combo, you can perform a Breaker by pressing the Forward button, which is either the left or right button depending on the side of the screen your opponent is on (Forward is Towards your opponent), and the block button at the same time. Press this button combo while you are getting hit by an opponent’s string of attacks to call in your Kameo knock your opponent away from you and get you out of the combo. You will get a notification on the screen that the Combo Breaker was performed in the middle of the screen under your character’s health.
One important note about the Combo Breaker is that your Kameo Fighter must not be on screen when you hit the button. If your Kameo is on-screen performing a move, you won’t be able to use a Combo Breaker even if the Kameo attack is an Ambush attack. So, if you want to use a Combo Breaker, make sure your Kameo move is finished and they are off the screen.
This is an important tool for every level of play, but do not just throw it out as soon as you start taking damage. Due to its high cost, you will need to learn when is the best point to use it. Just keep practicing and you will continue to learn when to use your Combo Breaker to maximize its effects.
