Starfield is jam-packed with things to do and factions to join. Turns out everyone wants what you are offering, and sometimes, that includes the UC SysDef, the branch of the military dedicated to fighting pirates. There are a lot of ways to get involved with these guys, but the easiest is to simply join the Vanguard and complete the Grunt Work quest.
As far as questlines go, this is one of the best. As the name implies, you are going undercover, and this exposes you to the darker side of Starfield’s universe – to the looting, murder, and pillaging. In this guide, we are going to walk you through the first quest of many in this string, Deep Cover.

How To Start Deep Cover
There are two ways you can start this quest that we know of. One requires you to join the Vanguard on New Atlantis and complete the Supra et Ultra and Grunt Work quests. Alternatively, you can get caught in UC space with contraband. Provided you hand over the goods, you will be approached by UC SysDef with an offer. Both paths lead to this quest.
Once in hand, head to the Sol System and dock with the flagship, UC Vigilance. You will be escorted to Commander Ikande and Lt Toft. Long story short, Ikande wants you to be their inside man – to be an undercover agent within the Crimson Fleet. You are an unknown entity that is perfect for infiltration. You will be well compensated, but you are highly encouraged to not give yourself over to the pirate life fully. The law still applies to you after all.
Accept the quest and get ready to infiltrate the most dangerous faction in the galaxy.
Head To Cydonia
To infiltrate the Crimson Fleet you need to prove yourself. Ikande fills your cargo hold with illegal drugs and hands you a sample to give out. You are to go to Cydonia and meet with Saorise Bowden, a shady dealer at the already-shady Trade Authority. Once face to face with Saorise, she will be hesitant to buy your Aurora cargo but will be far more willing if you pay her 1000 Credits. She is immune to threats, so just pay up and move on.
She will point you towards a pirate called Adler Kemp who can be found at the Broken Spear Bar. Head there and he will take your sample. Before he accepts the entire haul, however, he wants you to do a job for him. There is a client who owes him a lot of money – Karl Fielding. He wants that money back, and he doesn’t care how you do it.
Dealing With Karl Fielding
Follow your tracker to find Karl and talk to him. He claims he doesn’t have the money and that he needs the money for his family. Karl is full of crap – he is burning his money at the Broken Spear. You have a few options:
- Persuade – This will result in him suddenly having enough money to pay back Adler. Surprise, Karl was lying to your face the whole time.
- Attack – This isn’t the best idea since Cydonia is a well-defended location. Attacking Karl will result in you getting attacked by just about everyone. Expect death to follow soon after. You could find a way to kill Karl silently, although we never managed to pull it off.
- Pay – You can offer to pay his debt for him. Since we already know Karl is the scum of the earth, we don’t recommend you bail him out.
- Pickpocket – If you have the Pickpocket Skill unlocked, just take the money from him when he isn’t looking.
Once you have the money in hand, head back to Adler.
Rewards
Adler will congratulate you on a job well done, take the cargo off your hands and point you in the direction of Naeva Mora, one of the higher-ups in the Crimson Fleet. You aren’t a member just yet, but you are one step closer to infiltrating the organisation. You will receive the following rewards:
- 5000 Credits
- 500 EXP
This quest automatically leads into the ‘Rook Meets King’ quest, which we have a separate guide on.
