The optional conversations in The Last of Us Part 1 give some additional insight into the world of the game. Since they’re completely optional, they’re not required to be found in order to beat the main story, but they do provide plenty of background for its events. Additionally, if you can find all 60 hidden throughout the chapters, you’ll be rewarded with the “Getting to Know You” trophy.
While there’s a lot of chatter happening when NPCs are present in The Last of Us Part 1, optional conversations are marked with a small speech bubble icon and must be interacted with by hitting the triangle button. Optional conversations can also be marked by small magnifying glass icons assigned to environmental details that are noteworthy enough for characters to briefly discuss. If you’ve played through a chapter and think you might have missed one, you can always go back to the chapter select menu where you’ll see the list of collectibles that you’ve found and how many are left in any area.

#1: This optional conversation is found pretty quickly once the chapter starts. As soon as you get outside following Tess to the gate, look to your right and you’ll see two characters talking to one another: one man in a gray baseball hat and one woman in a jean jacket. Talk to them and you’ll have the first and only optional conversation in this leg of the game.
Beyond the Wall
#1: Soon after you get your backpack, you’ll climb into a completely wrecked diner. Follow Tess through the door. She’ll have an optional conversation bubble, so talk to her and then keep heading down the critical path. Your conversation hints at the relationship between her and Joel which adds a little bit more color to her role in the story.
#2: The second conversation in this section happens when you’re crouching through a building with a caved-in floor. As you travel through it, you’ll see a spore-infected dead body stuck to the wall on your right. You’ll see the investigation prompt and Tess will chime in about it saying that the body isn’t very old and that she and Joel should be careful.
The Slums
Despite the sheer number of NPCs in this area, there are no optional conversations in The Slums.
The Cargo
#1: After meeting up with Marlene and finishing the first combat encounter with her in your group, you’ll be able to find her standing on a bridge looking over a handful of dead bodies Fireflies. Upon approaching her, you’ll be able to talk to her about the Fireflies as she morns her fallen friends.
