Another wild Exotic Hand Cannon has been discovered in Destiny 2, and in this two-part quest you can acquire both the Lumina and Thorn. The Thorn is the prickly first version of the beefed-up Lumina, a handy Hand Cannon that can also heal your allies. This strange weapon generates ‘Noble Rounds’ when you score kills, and when fired from the hip, these noble rounds seek out and heal ailing temmates.
It’s a weird weapon, and one well-worth the investment. You can even Masterwork and improve this gun — and if you’re looking for the Thorn, you can acquire it from your collections once you’ve completed the quest for the Lumina. The Lumina is an interesting weapon, but it might not be entirely practical — the Thorn is a handy gun, too. It just gets consumed when you create the Lumina.

How To Unlock Rose & Lumina Hand Cannons | Exotic Quest Guide
To begin the Lumina Exotic Hand Cannon quest, you’ll need to find a particular chest in the EDZ. Land in the Trostland near Devrim, then go to the Salt Mines area — it’s through the sign marked ‘Salzwerk’. Go through the portal near the busted lift to appear on the cliffs outside. Keep travelling up, past the rusted car shells and Fallen enemies. Find the narrow path near the cliff guard rails up, and squeeze into the small cave ahead.
In the cave, you’ll find a treasure chest past a burning campfire. Open the chest to begin the Lumina Hand Cannon Exotic quest.
Step #1: Getting The Rose
Before you can get the Lumina, you’ll need to acquire the Rose. It’s another Hand Cannon you’ll need — complete all the steps, and it upgrades into the Lumina. We’re not there yet, so here’s what you need to find the Rose.
Find A Lost Sector Chest: Check the Exotic Quest letter from Shin in your inventory. It will tell you where to go to find a special ornate chest covered in roses. Go to whatever Lost Sector and find the special chest.
You’ll find the Rose quest item — to actually get the Rose, you’ll need to generate 250 Orbs of Light. There’s no easy way to do this, so just get farming until you’ve collected enough. At 250, you can turn them in and collect your Rose Hand Cannon.
Step #2: Complete Rose Challenges To Unlock Perks
The Rose you acquire is completely perkless. You’ll need to complete some mini-quests to actually unlock it.
- Earn 50,000 points in a Nightfall.
- Earn 35 points in Escalation Protocol, Blind Well, or Black Armory Forges.
- Earn 100 kills without reloading.
Finish these objectives — each one unlocks a perk slot on the Rose. Before you can move into the next step, you’ll need to earn a ton of kills and complete activities for your Exotic Quest queue. If you’re in a group with other players using the Rose, you’ll complete these objectives faster.
Step #3: Blasting Guardians
With the enhanced Rose, you’ll need to jump into the Crucible and start taking out Guardians for fun. You’ll need to earn kills with Hand Cannons in PVP, earn 50 Orbs of Light, and kill an enemy invader before they can score any kills.
Farming Hand Cannon Crucible kills and generating Orbs of Light are relatively easy. It’s the final task that’s difficult — have a Power Weapon equipped so you can take out Invaders very, very quickly, and tell your team to stay far apart. This isn’t a team objective, so only the player that scores the kill will be able to claim the prize. It’s annoying, but there’s no easy trick to make this work.
Step #4: Collect Rose Crystals
The most difficult step of this quest — if you don’t know where to look. To finally transform the Rose into the Lumina, you’ll need to find 11 purple crystals in the ‘Will of the Thousands‘ strike on Mars. Check out the locations in the linked video above — remember, you need to shoot the crystals with the Rose to absorb the power.
At the end of the strike, kill Xol and the Lumina will be your’s.
