Resident Evil 2 Remake: How To Earn S+ Rank | Tips & Tricks Guide

January 30, 2019 by Kevin Thielenhaus

The toughest rank in the game is possible to earn, even if you aren’t a total master. Here’s how to earn S+, and a couple of tips we’ve picked up.

Earning the highest rank in Resident Evil 2 remake isn’t impossible — if you know exactly what to do.

S+ rank can be earned in Standard or Hardcore difficulty, but you’ll need to beat the game incredibly fast. You only have 2 hours and 30 minutes to finish the entire story, so you can’t waste time solving puzzles slowly or running back to the item box. You’ll need to know all the solutions, and all the safe / dial lock codes. Basically, you’ll need to know everything in our abridged Resident Evil 2 walkthrough.

Just knowing what to do isn’t really enough. To help give you a headstart, I’ve provided a few tips I’ve learned while attempting this speedy run on Hardcore. You’ll want to be very experienced with the game first — I recommend playing through Leon A / Claire B before even attempting a Hardcore S run. After that, it’s all about sprinting, saving ammo, and preparing for those boss encounters.

How To Earn S+ Rank | Tips & Tricks Guide

S+ Rank is the best possible rank you can earn in Resident Evil 2. To get an S+ Rank, you’ll need to complete a single run (A-Scenario or B-Scenario) under the following parameters.

  • S+ Rank Requirements:
    • Must be on Hardcore Difficulty. (To unlock the Minigun / Rocket Launcher.)
    • Complete the run in 2:30 or less.
    • 3 Manual Saves maximum.
    • Do not use infinite ammo weapons.

Sounds hard? It is extremely hard. You have to complete your run as efficiently as possible — and we have a few tips and tricks to speed things up.

  • Tips & Tricks:
    • Shooting zombies in the head will temporarily stun them, giving you time to run past them.
    • Save the Shotgun for boss fights and the final area only.
      • Save Gunpowder / High Grade Gunpowder for Shotgun shells.
    • Stockpile grenades and flash grenades for the final battle. Ada will throw the Rocket Launcher to Leon with 1 minute 30 seconds on the timer.
    • Grab everything you can, but be mindful of how much you collect. Discard items as you go to speed things up, and drop items off at the boxes whenever you pass by.
    • Almost all attacks will put you in a Danger state. If you’re in Caution, don’t worry about it — just keep going.
    • Make sure to complete puzzles quickly. It helps to write down the solutions ahead of time so you don’t have to consult clues.
    • You only have three saves available. Save when you get the Club / Heart Key, save in the Sewers, and save when you first enter NEST.
    • Move the bookcases in the Library before Mr. X (Tyrant) appears. Make sure all three are lined up with the hole above. It’s much easier to solve this puzzle when Tyrant isn’t chasing you.
      • SKIP THE DIAMOND KEY. You never actually need it.
    • Make sure you collect the Shotgun / Grenade Launcher AND the Magnum / SMG. They’re absolutely required to beat the boss fights.
    • Only do the A-Scenarios! In B-Scenarios, you’ll have to fight Birkin’s 5th form, which just makes things take even longer. Stick to the A-Scenario.
