Red Dead Online: 16 Simple Tips To Help You Enjoy Online | Beginner’s Guide

May 24, 2019 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Struggling with some of the weirder aspects of the wild west? Here are 16 simple tips you might want to keep in mind next time you log into Red Dead Online.

#13: Use A Lasso & Knife For Clean Kills (That Don’t Waste Ammo)

Want to get clean kills to preserve pelt quality, get free meat, and save money on ammo? Just use the lasso and knife for hunting! Chase animals (or sneak close, staying downwind) and lasso a medium-sized animal up, and you’ll be able to get a quick knife kill. It’s pretty effective in both singleplayer and online modes.

#14: You Get Free Ammo When Restarting A Story Checkpoint

If you’re desperately low on ammo while playing story missions with your posse, there is a (sort of) solution. Just die and restart the mission, and you’ll start with a small supply of bullets — 50 each. Some missions will give you free Special Ammo too. Make sure to check all your ammo types after resetting, or just while you’re playing. You might have more ammo than you realize.

#15: Tap [L3] While Horse-Riding To Refill Stamina

Calming a horse when you’re riding hard will actually restore some of the horse’s dwindling stamina. Horses in RDO are exceptionally slow compared to your RDR2 singleplayer steeds, so using any method at all to preserve stamina is important. You can also (apparently!) tap [A / Cross] in time with the galloping of the horse at lower speeds to lower the stamina drain.

#16: Don’t Forget These Helpful Settings

When you get into RDO, there are a few simple settings you might want to change to make your experience better. Press [D-Pad: Left] to open your Character Menu. From here, you can change your chat settings to disable chat, or only allow your friends / posse to chat.

You can also change your horse settings — you can set it so that no one else can ride your horse. This is temporarily disabled during story missions with strangers, but when you’re back in free roam, this will stop random players from running off with your horse.

Those are all the tips we’ve figured out so far. Got your own secret tips and tricks? Let us know!
