The newest Minecraft update, Mounts of Mayhem, has much to offer. From a new weapon, the spear, to new mobs, Minecraft continues to bring forward many interesting and fun ideas. If you are to wander into the deep blue, swimming among the cod and dolphins, you may encounter one of these new rideable inclusions. The Nautilus. Let’s dive in on what you need to know in order to saddle up these tendril-y aquatic creatures.

Where do Nautilus spawn?

Let’s start with the basics, where do these creatures spawn? Nautilus are set to appear in all Ocean biomes, where the rate percentages hardly change between the different temperatures; the lowest being slightly below 15% in lukewarm oceans. Though if you’re hoping to maximize your chances, your best bet is to head to a cold ocean, deep cold ocean, or deep frozen ocean, with spawn rates settling at an even 50% for all three. These swimming creatures are found in groups of 1-3 in these habitats, with one of those having a 10% chance of being a baby nautilus.

How do you tame a Nautilus?

Ok, so now that you’ve found your newest riding companion, you wanna saddle this sea puppy up and ride into the underwater sunset. Alright that’s fair, let’s go over what you’re going to need to tame a Nautilus.

Pufferfish.

Yep that’s right, these spikey poisonous cuties are the sole taming item for the Nautilus. Either fed directly with the pufferfish item or as a bucket of pufferfish, chances of taming these creatures are ⅓ for each pufferfish fed. Nautilus, similar to other mounts, can also be led around with a pufferfish to an easier spot where the player is at less risk for drowning.

Where can I get pufferfish?

  • Spawn naturally in warm, lukewarm, and deep lukewarm ocean biomes.
  • Can be fished in any ocean
  • .33% chance of being dropped by Guardian or Elder Guardian

Nautilus Mount

Yee-haw, congrats on taming your brand new Nautilus buddy! Now here’s some things you’d might like to know about your spiffy new aquatic mount, both good and bad.

Breath of the Nautilus

While riding the Nautilus, the player is granted the Breath of the Nautilus, where the oxygen bar is paused while riding the mount underwater. That’s right, no need to pop back to the surface every so often to replenish your air.

Dashing

Similar to the Camel mounts, the Nautilus can dash forward underwater using the jump button. This dash can also be charged by holding the jump button for a farther, longer dash.

Armor

Copper, iron, gold, diamond, and netherite, the Nautilus can be adorned with fancy Nautilus Armor. Unfortunately these armors cannot be crafted and must be found in one of these following locations.

  • Buried Treasure: Found on beaches or on the ocean floor.
  • Shipwreck: Resembling a sunken ship, these can be found in any ocean biome.
  • Ocean Ruins: Structures found in any ocean biome or, in rare cases, along the beach.

Included, here is the armor amount for each tier. Keep in mind, Piglins are attracted to gold Nautilus armor and can pick this up.

  • Copper: 4
  • Iron: 5
  • Gold: 7
  • Diamond: 11
  • Netherite: 19

If you need to unequip the armor, you can use the shears on the Nautilus and it will be removed.

Weakness

Keep in mind, like most aquatic mobs, the Nautilus takes suffocation damage while on land. So if you want to keep your fun new mount alive, make a cozy water stable!

Here’s everything on how to tame and ride the new Nautilus mob introduced in the new Mounts for Mayhem. This mob has variants as well, but those will be explored another time.
