The Fatality is the cornerstone of the Mortal Kombat franchise, an iconic feature that gives the long-running fighting game series its identity. With the feature being so integral to defining what Mortal Kombat is, of course it would return for its latest entry, Mortal Kombat 1. Coming in at just over 60 total Fatalities, players will want to know how to perform each one to see the various gorey and violent ways you can finish your opponent. This guide will provide players with the full list of all of the Fatalities, how to perform them, and how to unlock them in Mortal Kombat 1.

All Fatalities In Mortal Kombat 1
Each of the 23 playable characters has 2 Fatalities with each of the 15 Kameo Fighters also having 1 Fatality. This means there are a total of 61 Fatalities in the game. While you will only see one Fatality in your movelist at the start of the game, you are allowed to perform either of them at any time but the second Fatality won’t show up in the movelust until you unlock it. To unlock other Fatalities, you will need to increase your Character Mastery Level with a specific character by playing as that character. This can be done in Online battles or the Invasion single player mode.
While playing online battles against other players will allow you to put your skills to the test, the amount of XP you get from these fights is low. Playing through the Invasion mode not only puts much easier A.I. opponents in your way but also provides much more XP per battle. You are also able to get back in battles much quicker than in the online mode where you need to connect to new players after each match. When completing these battles, make sure to finish them with either a Brutality or a Fatality for extra XP to speed up the leveling process.
Each Fatality requires you to input with the directional buttons and then another button. Now, for the directional buttons that you need to press, the literal button that you need to press might swap depending on what side of the screen you are on. For clarity, if I say Forward, that means press the button that goes toward your opponent. So, if the opponent stands on the right side of the screen, you are on the left, and I say “Forward,” then you will need to press the right button. It is the same rule if I say Back, press the button that goes away from the opponent. Up and Down won’t change no matter the side you stand on.
Additionally, I will be using the name of the actions that each button performs instead of using the button name itself so that I don’t need to specify the different buttons that change between the platforms. I will list out what button corresponds to each button on a default setup, so take that into consideration if you have remapped your controls.
Below is the breakdown of which buttons relate to which action by default:
- Front Punch means Square on PlayStation, X on Xbox, and Y on Switch
- Back Punch means Triangle on PlayStation, Y on Xbox, and X on Switch
- Front Kick is Cross on PlayStation, A on Xbox, and B on Switch
- Back Kick means Circle on PlayStation, B on Xbox, and A on Switch
- Kameo means R1 on PlayStation, RB on Xbox, and R on Switch
- Block is R2 on PlayStation, RT on Xbox, and ZR on Switch
One last thing before we get into the Fatalities themselves. You will need to be standing a certain distance away from the opponent to perform the Fatality. Close means you need to be right next to the opponent, close enough to perform a grab. Mid means you should have some distance away from your opponent. The space between the two of you should be around the distance you two are when a round starts. Far means that you need to get away from your opponent. Maybe not full screen since the stages in Mortal Kombat 1 are fairly big but definitely make some room.
