Hogwarts Legacy introduces your new student to a wondrous world of magic. At the start, you’ll be able to customize your character with hundreds of options, but what if you want to make more changes after the game has already begun. This is an extremely long game, so if you’re curious to see what can be customized (and what can’t) after getting started, we’ve got a breakdown of how character customization works in Hogsmeade.
In addition to regular character customization when designing your student, you also have unprecedented control over your fashion choices. Unlike most games with gear you can equip, Hogwarts Legacy gives you full control over your look. You can change any piece of gear to look like any other piece of gear in the same category. If you get a new powerful hat and equip it, you can make that hat look like the previous one — and there’s no need to visit an NPC tailor to do it. You can customize gear at any time through the Gear menu. It is incredibly useful for giving you the tools to make your character look as cool as possible at all times. Here’s how it works.

Character Customization Guide | How To Change Appearance & Gear
Before starting your adventure, you’ll have to design your character. Don’t worry, not all your options are permanently set-in-stone. You can further customize your character after your first night at Hogwarts. You can customize your appearance through a special NPC in Hogsmeade or customize your gear to give yourself the perfect stylish wizarding school outfit.
At the start of the game, your ability to change your character is limited. You can only change specific aspects of your created character. Here’s when you’ll be able to customize your character if you don’t like their look, and what you can change.
- How To Customize Your Character: Once you have access to Hogsmeade, you’ll be able to change your character appearance. In Hogsmeade, travel to ‘Madam Snelling’s Tress Emporium’ — the location has a scissors marker on the map.
- From this show, you can change your Hairstyles, Hair Color, Complexion, Freckles and Moles, Scars and Markings, Eyecolor, Eyebrow Color and Eyebrow Shape. All changes cost a small fee of about 20~ coin each.
You can’t change your skin color, face structure, gender or voice. If you want to access your pre-order cosmetics or just change your overall character’s outfit, you can change literally any gear piece for free at any time while retaining the buffs and upgrades from high level gear. There’s no penalty for changing the appearance of gear and you can do it at any time from the gear menu.
- How To Customize Gear: To change the appearance of any gear, open the Gear Tab and cursor over your gear. Don’t select it! From the Gear Tab where you can see all your equipped pieces, move the cursor over a piece of gear and press [Square / X]. This will open the customization menu.
- All pieces of gear you find will automatically be added to the Appearance Menu. Even if you don’t equip or even collect the piece of gear. If you open a chest and your inventory is full, you’ll still unlock the gear’s appearance.
The best part of customizing gear is that it is totally free and can be done anywhere. You can sell or destroy any old piece of gear that isn’t the best and still retain the appearance of that item — all gear appearances and permanently stored in your Change Appearance menu. You can never lose them. You’ll only unlock more as you progress through the story.
