The Last of Us was a breakout hit when it came to the series adaptation. Typically, video games adapted into shows and movies don’t do well. However, Naughty Dog crafted a game that was so cinematic that it made it likely very easy to replicate for the HBO series. With the show gearing up to see its second season debut in just a few days, it’s nice knowing that the network has already given it a renewal.
There’s no need to wait on ratings. Viewers are likely going to be sucked into this series all over again. HBO is at least banking on that as they went ahead and renewed the series for a third season, according to Variety. So, it’s more than welcomed news for fans who have loved the first season and itching to see where the storyline takes them next.
As you all know, that first season carefully crafted the first game installment of The Last of Us. However, making one single season for The Last of Us Part 2 is impossible. The second game is far too massive to cut into just one season, and it might be impossible to tell the storyline in just two seasons. We’ll just have to wait and see where the story takes us by the time season three wraps.
Regardless, we don’t have a third installment, even when the storyline wraps up the second game. Even if there is a push to see the story go beyond the video games, we already know that the showrunner isn’t keen on sticking around. Regardless, the focus right now should be on the second season. We already know there will also be some differences here from the video games. For instance, we know that there will be a different relationship between Dina and Joel. The production even changed Abby’s introduction, which you can read about right here.
As for when you can watch the next season, you don’t have long of a wait on your hands. The Last of Us season two will debut exclusively on HBO on April 13, 2025.
