It’s a little funny that we’re talking about Sonic The Hedgehog 4 when the third movie is still dominating both movie theaters, digital platforms, and social media via all the movie clips that keep getting posted online. We’re just saying. One of the reasons for the “immediate buzz” is quite simple: the third movie was REALLY good! The film brought Shadow the Hedgehog to life via the incredible Keanu Reeves, and his tale, while mixed with Sonic’s, was easily the most emotional of the trilogy so far. Thus, fans want to see what Jeff Fowler and his crew are willing to do with the fourth film.
That brings us to a new rumor that has been posted online. As you’ll see in the tweet below, one source claims that Sonic The Hedgehog 4 will feature “time travel elements.” To be clear, this isn’t confirmed by SEGA, Paramount, or even Jeff Fowler. However, when you look at what the franchise has done so far and what it hasn’t done, if you were to look for a way to “spice things up” without repeating what’s been done before, time travel will do that.
For longtime fans of Sonic’s games and other media, you know exactly the character that comes to mind when you think of time travel: Silver The Hedgehog. His whole arc, especially in the comics, is traveling through time to try and save the world from a disastrous future. In fact, Silver gets so strong at one point that he can control time better than anyone and becomes a being that doesn’t get “erased” no matter how much the future changes. Trying to erase him from the timeline? It’s no use.
While Silver hasn’t been confirmed for the 4th film yet, there is a piece of concept art featuring one of the upcoming film’s teased characters that could indicate his arrival. There’s a concept art featuring Metal Sonic standing next to Dr. Eggman. Both of them are on a “stage,” and the background behind that stage is a wiped-out wasteland. Eggman, naturally, is dressed as some kind of ruler, indicating that Metal Sonic took out Sonic and his crew, allowing Eggman to finally rule the world.
If Silver were a part of that world and could travel back in time, he would come to warn Sonic and the others of the Metal Sonic threat and try to prevent it.
We’ll likely have to wait until next year to get more details on things, though.
