Main Quest 3: The Point of the Spear
Now that you’re the fully grown Aloy, it’s time to do some real hunting in the open world of Horizon Zero Dawn. You start this mission off at your homestead, but you need to locate Rost before heading off on a hunting trip for fire arrows.
Run down the hill and light the bonfire on your left to do a quick save. Make this a habit anytime you come across any new bonfires. Take a moment to get used to all of Aloy’s new abilities. In addition to her bow, Aloy now has a spear for use in close quarters combat. Using R1 for a light attack and R2 for a heavy attack, take out the two dummy targets next to the bonfire. After you’ve gotten your bearings, exit the gat and continue down the hill.
Follow the marker until you reach Rost, making sure to collect any supplies along the way. When you come to a rock wall, use the X button to parkour your way up. Once you arrive at Rost, a cutscene will play. After speaking with Rost, use the zipline to get down to The Embrace and start hunting.
You have two tasks now: gathering the supplies for fire arrows, and trading with Karst for a Tripcaster. Right now, it is probably best to gather supplies, so head towards the strider site marker on your map. Be wary of any watchers on your path. While you don’t have to engage, they are great for practice and can supply Aloy with useful materials.
Once arriving at the herd, make sure to keep a low profile so you can get a beat on their numbers and movement patterns. For starters, it’s probably best to focus on striders that have strayed from the pack and not close to watchers that can alert the rest of the herd. Alerting the herd can mean losing the striders and having a whole team of watchers descend down on you.
It is easiest to find a higher vantage point and use this to stealth kill the machines one at a time. In order to harvest blaze from the striders, the canisters on their backs must be shot first. This also greatly decreases their health. Once you’ve selected a target, shoot the canister, then one or two more shots to finish them off. They can be defeated with the spear, but stealth is recommended when dealing with such large numbers of machines.
Once you’ve acquired the sufficient amount of supplies, open your crafting menu and use the right stick to select fire arrows. Holding down X will allow you to craft them, just make sure to reselect normal arrows before continuing to hunt because you will need these fire arrows later!
Now that you’ve acquired fire arrows, follow the other marker to Karst so you can purchase a tripcaster. Talk to Karst and you’ll be able to trade with him for a tripcaster. Make sure to sell an extraneous items and purchase useful supplies and upgrades before leaving, as your next foe won’t be as easy as the last few.
Now that you have a new weapon in tow, meet up with Rost at the North Gate to continue the mission. After the cutscene, walk down the hill and harvest resources from the sawtooth carcass. Continue by following the marker until a cutscene plays.
Now you are on a cliff and you’ve got a highly deadly Sawtooth lurking below you. Your task? Take it out. To your left is a supply crate. Open this and then make sure you’re ready for a tough fight!
Use your tripcaster to set up debilitating traps before engaging the sawtooth. Make sure these traps are in the path of the beast, or at least between you and the sawtooth. Additionally, this machine is faster and more powerful than the striders and watchers, but it is weak to fire (luckily, you just crafted a few fire arrows yourself).
After entangling it with the tripcaster, aim at the canister on its underbelly with your fire arrows. One accurate shot should do about half damage to the sawtooth. After that, whittle down its health with additional fire arrows until you defeat it. Make sure to dodge and roll if it begins to chase you. If you’re stuck, try moving vantage points before attacking or repositioning your trap set up. After bringing the beast down, salvage what you can off the body and a cutscene will be triggered, ending the mission. You’re now a seasoned hunter.
