Main Quest 1: A Gift From the Past
Finally! You made it to Horizon Zero Dawn! Before we get to some robot dinosaur hunting, we’ll have to play through a prologue. Here’s what to do to get your adventure started on the right foot!
You start off the game as a six year old Aloy who has just fallen into a cave. This first room doesn’t have anything to interact with, so take some time to get to know Aloy’s movements and adjust the controls to your liking. Once you get your bearings, proceed further into the cave by taking one of the two tunnels (it doesn’t matter which one you choose).
When you approach a grouping of stalactites blocking your path, press square to duck and crawl under them. Continue through the cave and enter a cracked door on your left. The path is linear here, so continue until you approach a body lying on the floor.
Press triangle to inspect the body and play a cutscene, the strange device that you receive allows you to see important interface information in your field of view, it’s called a scanner To use the scanner, simply click the R3 button, but be warned, while the scouter is in use, Aloy’s mobility is slowed, making you an easier target for enemies.
After getting used to your new tool, climb the stairs to find a locked bunker door. In order to unlock it, you need to locate to the holo lock, which is in a room adjacent to the locked door. Use your new scanner to find the location of the holo lock and then use the circle and square buttons to turn the holo lock clockwise and counterclockwise, respectively. Two counterclockwise turns should do the trick. Run back to the door, press triangle, and enter into the next room.
Directly ahead is a dead end, but if you look to the left of this dead end, you’ll find a datapoint. Turn right and walk down the stairs and proceed down the corridor until you discover yet another dead body. Inspecting the body will prompt another cutscene. After the cutscene, continue further into the cave and squeeze through the double doors with triangle.
You’ll have two options on where to go here. On your right is a corridor which contains two datapoints. Use your scouter to identify and listen to them. Going straight will lead to a staircase and a room full of bodies, most of these with a datapoint. Take your time in this room to collect all the datapoints and learn more about the posthistoric world of Horizon Zero Dawn.
Once you’re finished here, continue navigating through the cave. At some point you will hear Rost’s voice, which means you’re heading in the right direction. Climb a small pile of debris covered in sunlight and a cutscene will play. Congratulations! You’ve just finished your first mission. Now it’s time to go hunting.
