Black Myth: Wukong – Old Rattle-Drum Quest Guide

September 10, 2024 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Find the Mad Tiger’s hding spot with these three drum locations.

Chapter 2 of Black Myth: Wukong is packed with optional quests, and one of the most mysterious involves an old drum and a Mad Tiger. There’s an optional boss waiting underneath Sandgate Village, and if you’re willing to play the Old Rattle-Drum at three different locations, you can discover the secret area yourself. There’s an odd reward waiting for you at the end. Here’s every step you need to complete this quest.

Old Rattle-Drum Quest Guide

Unlock a hidden area beneath Sandgate Village and defeat an optional boss by completing this simple quest. For this quest, you’ll need to acquire the Old Rattle-Drum item then use it in three different locations. Here’s what you need to know.

  • How To Start: Progress to Chapter 2 and reach the Windrest Hamlet shrine in the Yellow Wind Formation region. From the shrine, cross the bridge — you’ll encounter the Tiger’s Acolyte boss. Defeat him to collect the Old Rattle-Drum.

Once you have the Old-Rattle Drum, you can begin the quest. To complete this quest, travel to three locations and use the Old-Rattle Drum. This is a key item, and using it plays a little drumbeat. When you reach the correct location, a message will appear asking you to use the drum.

  • Location #1: Go through the large gate that unlocks after defeating the Tiger Vanguard and Stone Vanguard bosses in the Valley of Despair area. Turn right at the rope bridge to find the spot.
  • Location #2: At Windrest Hamlet, go to the gate with the Rat Imperial Guard you encountered earlier. Go through the gate and turn left. Go to the small courtyard with the desiccated bodies praying.
  • Location #3: Next, at Sandgate Village, go to the area where you fought the Earth Wolf enemy. Pass the arena and stick to the left side until you reach a dead end.

If you play the Old-Rattle Drum at all three locations, you’ll be invited to enter a well. Go inside to access the Bottom of the Well shrine. You’ll encounter the Mad Tiger optional boss down here.

Defeat the Mad Tiger to earn the Mad Tiger Spirit, Blood of the Iron Bull, Stone Spirit, and a Yaogaui Core. You’ll also get the Plaguebane Gourd — this gourd lowers health recovery by half but increases attack power for a short duration.

Complete those steps to finish this cryptic quest in Black Myth: Wukong. This quest is mostly for your own curiosity — but more boss fights are always welcome.
